Mom and bro left yesterday, they were in town for a short 4 day stay.

They both live in France. My mother grew up in south side Chicago in Hyde Park. She became a background painter for Disney animation back when the company hand painted every movie. I remember her working on feature films such as Mulan, Tarzan, A Goofy Movie and Hercules. Now she works comissioned by various cities to help kids in rough neighborhoods. She has them make mosaïc walls, inspiring them to discover and further their creative abilities. It’s also great to see run down or bland neighborhoods look beautiful with these colorful artistic walls.

My brother Ian worked on humanitarian missions throughout the world. He was sent to Kenya, Uganda, Nepal and Syria to help people reboot their small businesses struck by natural disasters or war. I remember him nearly dying of yellow fever in Nepal while his girlfriend nursed him back to health (she’s an actual nurse). He was sick and stuck in a makeshift hospital with tarps and muddy grounds. It was set up after an earthquake killed 9000 people and injured 22000.

My brother Ian is now finishing an 8 month apprenticeship to work as a carpenter on unique solid wood structures such as old churches and houses.

I’m happy to have such a talented and adventurous family.

Somehow, to be wild, adventurous, fiercely independent, to be creative and explore seems to be a family pattern.
