How To Get Rid of Fire Ants Organically with Orange Oil 11/02/2022

Here in Zone 8B, I'm doing a little zone pushing, which means I need to prepare my tropical plants for winter with heat lamps in my garage, by killing fire ants, termites, and other pests in their containers.

4oz of orange oil plus one gallon of water should take out most fire ant nests without poisoning your garden, grass, or plants in containers.

Good luck this fall with all your home garden projects!

This fall I'm adding four celeste fig trees to my backyard orchard. Its rare to find fruiting saplings so large, so I thought I'd share this find from Pflugerville's Home Depot, where I got these trees for $30 a piece.

Summer Garden Tour August 2022 - Growing Eggplant, Watermelon, and Fall Gardening Prep in Austin, TX 08/08/2022

Here in Austin Texas, I am working with some really dense clay soil, because of this, I've decided to grow fruits and veggies in a large raised bed, and build a french drain for my peach trees.

My raised bed is 60 square feet (20'x3') and about 2 feet high, I'm growing peppers, cucumbers, strawberries, tomatoes, eggplant, watermelon, and a few other seedling starter plants. Near my raised bed, I'm growing ornamentals and olive trees in containers to attract pollinators for my raised bed vegetables and backyard peach orchard. I'm also doing a little zone pushing by growing pineapples and an avocado sapling in containers.

I hope this garden tour is entertaining, educational, and inspiring. Good luck with all your gardening projects this summer!

Making Refrigerator Pickles - Growing Cucumbers From Seed in Austin Texas 07/10/2022

I grew cucumbers in my backyard and pickled them! We dont have good soil, but the cucumbers didnt seem to mind the heat in their raised bed. They do require a lot of water though, so if you try to grow them, you'll need to water at least twice a week. Personally, I water every other day.

I pickled these cucumbers with jalapeños. The pickles were crunchy, and had some heat without being too hot, they were as good as any deli pickle I've ever had! If you have any questions, feel free to ask in the comments!

How I Built a French Drain to Improve Drainage on Clay Soil 06/06/2022

I've built a french drain to get rid of mosquitoes and standing water in my backyard, this will also help to remedy root rot issues for my backyard orchard's peach trees.

Austin's new suburbs have dense clay soil brought in for building home foundations. In most cases developers plan for drainage, but in my case, there are some ongoing drainage issues.

Improving the clay soil was an option here, but given the size of my backyard, I figured a french drain would be a better solution. Let me know if you have any questions about how I did this.

This weekend I've harvested some mammoth tomatoes from my raised bed. I've had a really great experience growing tomatoes in Austin Texas, and in this video I'm discussing some issues I've faced. Tomatoes do great in central Texas, but they'll do great anywhere that has a daytime temperature is between 50-90 degrees, and a nighttime temperature is between 40-75 degrees.
