This portly spider crab has tiny hairs on its carapace (shell) that attract small pieces of algae, barnacles, shell fragments, or pieces of seagrass to help it blend in with its surroundings. In our upcoming LIVE program called “Crabs: Structures and Functions,” we'll learn about what makes a crab a crab and go over crab anatomy. Then, we'll dive a little deeper into specific adaptations different crab species have that allow them to survive in the environment. If we're lucky, we may even have a few special (🦀) guests!

Join us LIVE on May 20th for “Crabs: Structures and Functions.” Register online at https://www.connect2texas.net/ by clicking on the “Events” tab and selecting “Texas Parks as Wildlife Department” as the content provider in the program filter. Registration closes one week before the scheduled program date.

If this program time or date doesn’t work for you, you can always email us at [email protected] to request an alternative date for your students.

There are 5 seagrass species that can be found along the Texas coast. Each species is pictured here with their common and scientific names. This may seem like a relatively small number of species, but there are only about 70 species of seagrass in the entire world. In our “Seagrass Science” program, students will create their own field guide that will help them identify each of these 5 species native to Texas. They will also learn about why seagrass is important and what TPWD biologists are doing to help protect it.

Join us LIVE on May 13th for “Seagrass Science.” Register online at https://www.connect2texas.net/ by clicking on the “Events” tab and selecting “Texas Parks as Wildlife Department” as the content provider in the program filter. Registration closes one week before the scheduled program date.

Looking to make career connections? Consider registering for TPWDiscover's upcoming program, "Coastal Science Investigation."

TPWD Kills and Spills biologists are trained to respond to fish kills and various kinds of spills. During our "Coastal Science Investigation" program, students will learn more about what these biologists do, why it's important to respond to fish kills, and what causes them in the first place. Students will then act as honorary members of the Kills and Spills team to determine what caused a mystery fish kill and estimate how many fish were impacted.

Join us LIVE on April 29th for “Coastal Science Investigation.” Register online at https://www.connect2texas.net/ by clicking on the “Events” tab and selecting “Texas Parks as Wildlife Department” as the content provider in the program filter. Registration closes one week before the scheduled program date.

If this program time or date doesn’t work for you, you can always email us at [email protected] to request an alternative date for your students or to request a link to the program recording.

Seagrass is a photosynthetic plant, which means it needs sunlight in order to create energy and grow. As a result, we typically see seagrass growing in very shallow water. Seagrass is a great nursery habitat for juvenile fish species and can be a really good hunting ground for larger fish species that fishermen are interested in catching.

Unfortunately, this puts this type of submerged aquatic vegetation at risk of being scarred by boat propellers and these scars can take a very long time to recover. The video being shown here is from the Upper Laguna Madre near Corpus Christi.

In our program “Seagrass Science,” students will learn about what seagrass is, how it’s different from algae, which species we can find here in Texas, and what TPWD biologists are doing to protect this important habitat.

You can join us LIVE on April 8th or May 13th for “Seagrass Science.” Register online at https://www.connect2texas.net/ by clicking on the “Events” tab and selecting “Texas Parks as Wildlife Department” as the content provider in the program filter. Registration closes one week before the scheduled program date.
