Feeling an enormous amount of gratitude and love as I reflect on this year as it comes to an “end”. This was the 1st edition of our “Rifugio Austin Digest” and it brings a huge smile on my face to see snippets of all the learning, creativity, and fun we all shared in this past summer!!
As I was filming the Friendsgiving food spread, Ms. Sofia was in the room working with students on writing and singing the lyrics to The Sound of Music. The whole moment unfolded naturally and organically, filling the space with genuine joy for everyone present!

And that’s a wrap! Austin Studio Tour was pure magic! We’re so grateful for the work our students poured into this show, their creativity and unique perspectives. Watching them share their worlds with all of you made our hearts swell. Thank you to for keeping the studio tour alive!
And the community that showed up… the support, the love, the energy in the room reminded me exactly why Rifugio exists. We build this together!
This was also the very first show from our teacher artist collective, and it felt like the beginning of something beautiful. A new chapter. A new way of weaving our gifts into the lives of the children we serve. Thank you to .gamba.vargas, , , .crawdad, and !

We’re excited to share that our first collective show will debut as part of the Austin Studio Tour. This exhibition highlights the work of our teacher–artists and the creative practices that shape our classrooms every day.

Our upcoming art show for the is all about values in motion. Students explored what matters most to them, such as empathy, honesty, authenticity, and joy. They translated those ideas into kinetic sculptures that can move. Come see our values take shape and come to life!

To see Morgan unfold into her own rhythm as a teacher has been a joy! Her ideas breathe life into the classroom, grounded in curiosity and care. She is patient, kind, and a calm presence for our students. We are so grateful to teach alongside her!!

There’s something so rare about someone who shows up day after day with authenticity, deep care, and full heart. Sofia does just that. She holds space for our students with patience, curiosity, and an unwavering belief in their potential. Her dedication to this program, to the process, and to each child has shaped Rifugio in countless ways. Beyond grateful for Sofia and all she is, was, and will ever be!!
It’s amazing how one exhibit from years ago can leave such a mark. So much of our visual arts work at Rifugio grew from the inspiration we felt that day. It still guides us in the most unexpected ways.
