In our first year of existence (2021), we set out to make large-scale, wheat-paste chess pieces. This is what the students dreamt up of the black king piece. It was quite the undertaking and continued to change as time went on and more ideas took place. At our school, chess takes shape in all forms!

A couple days ago, I shared one of my biggest beliefs about education. Today, I wanted to show you what that belief looks like in practice.

These are only a few moments from our days together. There are hundreds more that happen when children are trusted with real experiences, meaningful responsibility, and a community they belong to.

This is the kind of childhood we’re building at Rifugio.

A strong belief I hold is that children don’t learn for life, they learn THROUGH life. Childhood is extremely valuable in its own right. They deserve work that matters NOW, relationships that are real NOW, and opportunities to contribute NOW.

A call to action for Mother Earth! Our students were deeply touched and connected to the song, “Insectos” by EatYourSpanish. Vanessa and Evan, the creators, worked with us to edit the song to fit the performance time. We are so grateful for their music, inspiration, and commitment to Mother Earth! Muchísimas gracias!!

One translanguaging podcast that our students listen to regularly is EatYourSpanish. For our end of year ceremony, our students decided to perform their song, “Insectos”. They deeply connected to the message of protecting our pollinators and Mother Earth. Vanessa and Evan, the creators of EatYourSpanish worked with us to edit the music so it would be cut down to fit the performance. Muchísimas gracias!!!!!!

Continuing on with a couple snippets of making the masa!

A small snippet for our cooking documentary. We made tamales at school. In fact, we make them every year for our Winter Posada Celebration. The kind that aren’t where everything is prepped and portioned out ahead of time so the kids can follow five neat steps and everyone ends up with the same thing.

We made a mess and talked about the masa and the energy that goes into the food we’re making. We figured out how much filling was too much filling.

This is a pretty normal day at Rifugio.

Learning happens while we’re doing real things together. Cooking. Growing. Making. Asking questions. Changing our minds. Failing. Doing it again.

If you’ve ever wondered what school could look like outside of the version most of us grew up with, come take a peek inside Rifugio.

We’re enrolling for the fall.

A couple years ago, we had the opportunity to shoot a documentary style movie with the intention of turning it into a cooking show! We were making tamales and shot over the course of two days. Here is a short clip that gives lots of joy!
