Celebrating Student Success!

Today our program was proud to attend the Capital IDEA Celebration of Achievements. Representing our team were Ashley Catherine Silva and Kim Hernandez , alongside many incredible supporters of Capital IDEA and their mission. Fun fact : Ashley is also an Alumni of Capital IDEA!

Capital IDEA plays a life-changing role in helping students succeed by removing financial barriers to college. Their program provides support for tuition, books, childcare assistance, and career placement, allowing students to focus on reaching their educational and career goals.

In 2025, seven of our Surgical Technology graduates were supported through this amazing program. Even more impressive, Capital IDEA has supported 1,238 students in the Austin area this year alone!

We were also honored to see Dr. Monique Reeves, Executive Vice Chancellor for the Future of Austin Community College, and Steve Jacobs, member of the ACC Board of Trustees, in attendance celebrating these incredible achievements.

We are so grateful for the opportunities Capital IDEA creates for students and the impact it continues to have on our community.

Big shout out to Jehona Tafilaj Morand! Last week she was able to attend Patton Elementary to share what surgical technology career is all about 💥 part of recruitment is starting very early in age introducing this wonderful career. She was able to gear the presentation to this younger crowd, and was able to make it fun and active! We are so fortunate to have such dedicated faculty who make time in our very busy schedules to do these recruitment events. Thank you so much Jehona 💜

💥Shout out to Samantha Thomas & Driana G for representing ACC Surgical Technology at the 13th annual Youth Career Fest at the Parmer Event Center.💥

Youth Career Fest provides students, grades 8-12, with exposure to different career sectors and college opportunities to equip them with the knowledge and experience to find their path after graduation. As the largest Career Fest in the city, they have hosted
more than 200+ vendors from diverse career fields with nearly 3000+ attendees from the Austin area.

Last Friday we celebrated Carol Hamilton (Martin-Wood) on her retirement from ACC.
Carol graduated from ACC Surgical Technology Program in 1988. She worked at various hospitals in Austin and even went on to get her RN license. She started her teaching career in 2009, where she contributed many years to teaching students. She served as a Department Chair, and an amazing resource for newer faculty. We celebrated with her in the lab, along with 4 other recent retirees. We all felt the love and support of this amazing program. Congratulations Carol! We will miss you dearly 💜

Round Rock Campus students celebrate the end of the semester with a holiday pot luck. What a wonderful way to decompress before final skills testing next week. We had students play a communication trust walk with a partner- teaching them how difficult it can be give directions. They learned to actively listen and give clear instructions. They worked together well and had lots of laughs together!
