Urgent - CALL TO ACTION!
Please contact the House of Representatives Committee on Education and provide the following information.
I am writing or calling to express my strong opposition to the proposal to allow the state school superintendent to be appointed by the governor rather than being elected by the community. This change poses significant risks to the democratic process and the accountability that our education system requires.
An elected superintendent is directly accountable to the community, ensuring that the voices of parents, teachers, and students are heard and represented. This form of leadership fosters transparency and encourages public engagement in our educational system. When the superintendent is chosen by the people, it allows for a more responsive and responsible approach to education, tailored to the unique needs of our community.
In contrast, an appointed superintendent may prioritize the interests of the governor or political agendas over the needs of our students and schools. This shift could diminish local control and reduce the ability of stakeholders to influence educational policies that directly affect their children’s learning environment.
Moreover, the current system empowers citizens by allowing them to vote for a leader who aligns with their values and vision for education. If the governor appoints the superintendent, we risk undermining this essential democratic process, making it harder for the community to advocate for the changes and improvements our schools desperately need.
I urge you to consider the implications of this proposal carefully and to prioritize the voices of our community members in the decision-making process regarding our educational leadership. Let us preserve the democratic values that allow our schools to thrive and serve our children effectively.
Thank you for your attention to this important matter. I hope you will stand with our community in opposing this change.
