COMMEMORATING NATIONAL FREEDOM DAY
Juneteenth, which is celebrated each year on June 19, officially became a holiday in Illinois starting in 2022. Its purpose is to commemorate the effective end of slavery in the United States. It marks the day in 1865 when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce that the state's enslaved people were finally free—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. In alignment with state agencies and schools, all SD129 buildings will be closed on Friday in observance of the holiday.

Summer projects are in full swing across the district! 🛠️
These improvements support safety, facility upkeep, and student success, from drainage work at Herget and tuckpointing at Freeman to plumbing updates at Schneider, Smith, and Nicholson.
At West High, work has begun to update the original 1953 bleachers and replace the blue field house flooring with a new track surface and turf area for physical education, athletics, and activities. Transportation facility work is also underway, with solar canopies being installed to protect buses from the elements while helping reduce electricity costs. ☀️🚌
We’ll continue sharing updates as these projects move forward!
