Thereโ€™s a new Vision Athlete in town!

Itโ€™s my little brotherโ€ฆ Gumdrop!

I told Gumdrop that vision therapy is kind of like exercise for your visual system. Just like athletes practice skills to help their bodies work better, Vision Athletes practice skills that help their eyes and brain work better together.

So Gumdrop decided to start training.

These very fashionable red and green glasses are part of the job.

Meowmy kept a scrapbook of my vision therapy journey. Itโ€™s filled with pictures of the different activities and exercises I worked on along the way.

Now I think it might be time to add a few Gumdrop pages.

Vision therapy can look like play. It can involve movement, balance, tracking, focusing, coordination, special lenses and all sorts of interesting activities, but behind every activity is a skill being practiced.

And we think kids who work hard at those skills deserve a pretty special title:

๐Ÿ… VISION ATHLETE ๐Ÿ…

If youโ€™re a Vision Athlete too, Gumdrop and I are cheering for you!

August is already halfway over, but thereโ€™s still plenty of time to make an impact during Childrenโ€™s Vision & Learning Month!

Help bring attention to the important connection between vision and learning by encouraging your community to officially recognize Childrenโ€™s Vision & Learning Month.

A proclamation is a great way to raise awareness, start conversations, and help parents and educators understand that good vision is about much more than seeing 20/20.

Visit our Proclamation Page to get started and help bring Childrenโ€™s Vision & Learning Month to your community!

Weโ€™re proud to recognize BIASC Board Member Dr. Katie Davis for an incredible story that serves as an important reminder about the value of early detection and listening when something doesnโ€™t seem right.

During a routine comprehensive eye exam, Dr. Davis identified and carefully monitored an abnormality that ultimately led to a patient being diagnosed with ocular melanoma. Because it was detected early, the patient was able to receive treatment while preserving his vision and quality of life.

For the brain injury community, this is also a good reminder that our overall health matters. Changes in vision and other symptoms can sometimes provide important clues about neurological and other health conditions, and regular medical care can make a difference.

Weโ€™re grateful to have professionals like Dr. Davis serving on the BIASC Board and advocating for the health of South Carolinians.
