New research from ColoradoSPH highlights a growing global public health challenge: heat as a “hazard multiplier” for workers.
A decade-long study of sugarcane workers in Guatemala shows how extreme heat, often exceeding 100°F, can lead to kidney injury and chronic disease, even in otherwise healthy individuals.
The findings underscore a critical reality: as temperatures rise, so do risks for outdoor workers worldwide.

The Firearm Injury Prevention Initiative (FIPI) recently released a Three-Year Impact Report (2023-2026).
This report highlights FIPI’s growth from a bold idea into a nationally recognized leader in firearm injury prevention. It celebrates what is possible when researchers, clinicians, firearm owners, community partners, survivors of violence, students, practitioners, and more come together around the belief that we all have a role to play in preventing firearm injuries.

A new study following participants for 20+ years found that people with prediabetes who adopted lifestyle changes—like regular physical activity, healthier eating, and modest weight loss—had a 21% lower risk of developing multiple chronic conditions later in life.
➡️ The takeaway: Prevention works. Early, sustained lifestyle changes can support healthier aging, independence, and lower healthcare costs.

What does the global burden of foodborne disease look like today?
New research published in The Lancet Global Health helps answer that question.
Co-authored by Dr. Elaine Scallan Walter, a professor at ColoradoSPH, and an international team of researchers, the study provides updated World Health Organization (WHO) estimates of the global, regional, and national burden associated with 42 foodborne infectious and chemical hazards from 2000–2021.
