🌊 Exploring World and Colorado’s Lakes

This week, our students studied “World Lakes”—and we didn’t stop at just reading about them! 📚💧

As part of our studies, we visited three local lakes:

🏞 Barr Lake
🌅 Sloan’s Lake
🌲 Rocky Mountain Lake Park

At each stop, students observed their surroundings, recorded what they saw and heard, and reflected on how lakes support both natural ecosystems and human communities. They used their five senses to become field scientists—collecting data, asking questions, and making connections to what they’ve learned in the classroom.

Through this hands-on experience, students are gaining a richer understanding of:

🌍 How lakes form and change over time

🌿 The plants and animals that depend on lake ecosystems

💧 How people use lakes for recreation, water, and conservation

We had an incredible journey to the Liberty Energy facility in Henderson, and what an adventure it was! Our field trip took us deep into the heart of energy extraction.

We were privileged to have amazing leaders and guides accompany us every step of the way. They expertly walked us through the intricate process of extracting oil and gas, providing invaluable insights that brought the industry to life. One of the highlights was our engaging cookie jar experiment, designed to help us visualize the layers beneath the earth's surface where all the magic happens. It was hands-on learning at its finest!

A huge thank you to our gracious hosts at Liberty Energy for their hospitality and wealth of information. It's clear that the company is not only at the forefront of innovation in the energy sector but also a fantastic place to work! Our latest exploration into literacy has taken us on an engaging journey through writing personal narratives! Our students selected topics that resonate deeply with them, crafted impactful topic sentences that lay the groundwork for their stories, and mapped out their narratives with illustrations and notes, a process that enhances storytelling and helps organize thoughts in an enjoyable and effective manner. They learned to sequence events in a way that ensures their stories flow seamlessly, and enriched their narratives with descriptive language, dialogue, and sensory details to breathe life into their stories.

Last week, we took an incredible trip to the Denver Museum of Nature & Science! Our students witnessed firsthand the amazing work of paleontologists carefully preserving fossils during a special behind-the-scenes tour, connecting what they just learned in the classroom to the real world.
