Paine College

Paine College Paine College students can engage in programs and majors offered through the college’s 2 schools, In 1903 Paine Institute was recharted as The Paine College.

Paine College was founded in 1882 as the result of an unusual collaboration between Black and White Methodists who believed in church-related education as a means of advancement for a newly freed and underserved people. Leaders such as Bishop Lucius Holsey of the Colored (now Christian) Methodist Episcopal Church and Atticus Haygood, a Bishop in the Methodist Episcopal Church South (now United Methodist) worked to establish The Paine Institute to train preachers and teachers to educate the newly freed men and women. In January 1884, classes began in rented quarters at 10th and Broad Streets in Augusta, Georgia. The College's Tradition of Excellence continues today through present-day students who are forging their way in an ever-changing, fast-paced global community. In an effort to meet the challenge, students engage in an array of activities, including international studies, leadership training, and scholarly activities. Supported by the United Methodist Church, Paine College is a Historically Black, private, church-related, four-year, co-educational college which, through its residential, commuter, and off-site units, strives to develop self-sufficient and productive citizens, committed to intellectual pursuits and aesthetic appreciation in a global society. Since its founding in 1882, Paine College has continued to prepare students for leadership in the local, national, and international communities.

What a wonderful Paine College Day at historic Thankful Baptist Church!

On Sunday, President Dr. Lester A. McCorn delivered a powerful message, “What’s in Your Vessel?”, during a special worship service celebrating Paine College.

Paine was well represented by our alumni, including Trey McLaughlin and The Paine College Ensemble, along with current scholars, including SGA President Panashe Mukumba.

We are especially grateful to the Thankful Baptist Church congregation for its generous gift of more than $7,000 to Paine College. Your support is an investment in our students, our mission, and the continued legacy of this historic institution.

Thank you, Thankful Baptist Church, for your warm hospitality, generous spirit, and continued support of Paine College.

Paine College: A Cornerstone of Activism and Civic Engagement 🗳️✊🏾
Paine College proudly stands at the helm of the civil rights movement, and that legacy of activism and leadership continues today!
Yesterday, we were thrilled to host a powerful, non-partisan Get Out the Vote event right here on campus, empowering our students to make their voices heard and take an active role in shaping our democracy. When young people get involved, history is made.
A massive thank you to all the student groups, community partners, and organizations that came out to support this vital event and energize our campus. Together, we are keeping the flame of civic duty burning bright! 🔥

Today, Paine College pauses to remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and to honor the courage of the first responders, service members, and everyday heroes whose bravery and sacrifice will never be forgotten.
As a Paine College family, we stand together in remembrance, reflection, and hope—remembering that even in moments of great tragedy, unity, compassion, and service can bring us together.
We remember. We honor. We will never forget.

Transformation is happening at Paine College! 💜🤍
Yesterday, President McCorn served as the featured speaker for the Lucy Craft Laney Museum Luncheon Series. Paineites, alumni, and friends gathered for an afternoon of fellowship and a delicious lunch as Dr. McCorn shared an inspiring message centered on “Transformation” and the exciting work underway at Paine College.
It was great to see Paine College past president Dr. Cheryl Evans Jones in attendance, making the occasion even more special.
Thank you to the Lucy Craft Laney Museum of Black History for providing a wonderful opportunity to share the Paine story and celebrate the College’s continued transformation.
💜 Paine is transforming. Paine is moving forward. Paine is IGNITED! 🔥
