Researchers at the Medical College of Georgia have found that a pathway involved in how the body stores cholesterol may contribute to damage caused by diabetic retinopathy. In a study published in Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science, researchers found that blocking an enzyme involved in this pathway reduced inflammation, blood vessel damage and nerve cell loss in the eyes of diabetic mice. The findings provide new insight into how cholesterol may contribute to diabetic eye disease and could help guide future research into treatments.

Medical College of Georgia physicians are bringing advanced trauma training directly to rural healthcare providers. Through the Rural Interactive Trauma Simulation program, or RITS, the MCG team has trained more than 200 providers across the state, helping nurses, EMS crews, respiratory therapists and physicians build the skills needed to stabilize critically injured patients and prepare them for transfer to a trauma center.

Klaus Ley, MD, founding co-director of the Immunology Center of Georgia at the Medical College of Georgia, has been invited to join The American Association of Immunologists - AAI's Sustainable Scientific Enterprise Task Force.

Established in 2026, the task force is examining challenges in the scientific publication process, including increasingly extensive peer-review requirements and delays in publishing research. Ley will work alongside immunology researchers from across the country to explore ways to improve the efficiency and sustainability of the research enterprise while maintaining scientific rigor.

Researchers at the Medical College of Georgia have found that a gene previously linked to coronary artery disease risk may play an important role in protecting the heart’s arteries. In a new study published in Circulation, researchers in MCG’s Vascular Biology Center found that loss of the LMOD1 gene triggered rapid plaque buildup in coronary arteries, highlighting the role of vascular smooth muscle cells in resisting disease.
