Literacy Volunteers of Kennebec

Literacy Volunteers of Kennebec LVK has been helping adults improve their reading & writing for over 50 years. All of our services are free, private and confidential.

We are a non-profit organization, supported by the Kennebec Valley United Way as well as private donations and fundraisers. We provide one-to-one, learner centered instruction to area adults who generally read below the 6th grade level. We also assist speakers of other languages as they learn to speak, read and write in English. LVA is an accredited affiliate of ProLiteracy, the largest and most respected adult literacy organization.

Giving isn’t just about making a donation—it’s about opening doors. 📖✨

On International Day of Charity, we want to highlight the incredible impact our donors, tutors, and supporters make right here in Kennebec County every single day. Because of your generosity, adult learners gain the literacy, language, and life skills needed to thrive, support their families, and reach their full potential.

Whether you donate your time as a volunteer tutor or make a financial contribution, you are actively changing lives through literacy.

💙 How to support us today:

Become a Tutor: Share your time and empower a neighbor.

Donate: Help us provide essential learning materials and resources.

In 1995, Dolly Parton started mailing books to children in her home county to inspire children to love reading in honor of her dad, who couldn’t read or write.

That idea lives here too. Every month, more than 2,000 children in Kennebec County find a book in the mailbox — because of neighbors who fund it, volunteers who run it, and a woman from Sevier County, TN who started it all.

Thank you, Dolly. We will always love you.

To help Literacy Volunteers of Kennebec honor Dolly Parton's legacy and her commitment to opening the world of reading to every child, please consider a donation to LVK, earmarked for the book delivery program. Thank you.

35 years ago, President George H.W. Bush signed the National Literacy Act into law, cementing a national commitment to lifelong learning.

Mrs. Barbara Bush deeply believed that literacy is the foundation for opportunity, growth, and success. Today, the George & Barbara Bush Foundation keeps that mission moving forward through the Barbara Bush Fund for Family Literacy—empowering parents and children to read, learn, and thrive together.

By investing in family literacy, we continue President and Mrs. Bush’s shared legacy: strengthening families, expanding opportunities, and creating lasting impact across the nation.
