Dick Van D**e is 100 years old, and he just described the whole arc of staying active better than most fitness books manage. 🚲
In his 30s he exercised to look good. In his 50s, to stay fit. By his 70s it was about staying ambulatory, and in his 80s, about staying out of assisted living. Now, in his 90s, he says he's doing it out of pure defiance.
Every cyclist who's been at this a while knows exactly what he means. The reasons change as the years stack up. What starts as vanity turns into health, then into independence, and eventually into plain stubbornness. A refusal to hand the years an easy win.
That's what a bike gives you. A way to keep saying no to the slow fade for one more season, then another, then another.

We've long known cycling keeps the heart strong and the legs powerful. The newer research points somewhere more interesting. When you ride, your muscles release a hormone called irisin that crosses into the brain, helps spark the growth of new neurons, and appears to push back against some of the processes behind Alzheimer's disease.
Researchers at Harvard's Stem Cell Institute have helped confirm what a lot of us already suspected. Movement isn't only good for the body. It does something for the mind too.
Here's the mechanism, as best the science understands it so far.
As your legs turn the pedals, your muscle fibers make a protein called FNDC5. That protein gets cleaved into irisin, which enters the bloodstream and crosses the blood-brain barrier. Once inside, irisin goes to work in the hippocampus, the region tied to learning and memory.
In animal studies, irisin boosted brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF. BDNF acts a bit like fertilizer for the brain: it encourages new neurons, strengthens the connections between them, and helps protect the cells already there.
The cause-and-effect experiments are the striking part. When scientists blocked irisin in mice, the cognitive benefits of exercise disappeared. When they raised irisin in mice with Alzheimer's-like symptoms, memory improved and brain inflammation dropped. In those models, the hormone wasn't just linked to better brain health. It drove it.
Human evidence is earlier and thinner, but it lines up. Post-mortem studies show people with Alzheimer's tend to have lower irisin levels than healthy people. In small trials, regular exercisers showed measurable rises in circulating irisin alongside better cognitive scores. It's promising, not settled, and worth saying plainly: most of the hard causal work is still in mice.
Which is a good reason to ride, not a small one.
We're not only riding to stay fit. We're riding to stay sharp. To keep remembering our grandkids' names and hold onto our independence as we get older.
And unlike an experimental drug or some supplement of the month, this one is free and most of us are already doing it. No prescription, no lab. Just a bike and the habit of getting on it.
The evidence also suggests consistency matters more than intensity. Whether you're hammering intervals or spinning easy through the countryside, your muscles are making irisin either way. The trick is to keep showing up, because the protective effects seem to build over time.
So next time someone asks why you spend so many hours on the bike, you've got an answer. You're not just chasing fitness or burning calories. You're looking after decades of clear thinking and sharp memory, and the ability to keep living on your own terms.
Every pedal stroke is a small deposit in your cognitive future. That might be one of the best reasons there is to ride.

I played for Nick Saban, Bill Belichick, and Sean Payton. I studied under some of the greatest coaching minds in football history. And after the Lord saved me, I saw something that changed everything.
Every leadership principle that made those teams thrive is biblical. They just did it for the glory of man instead of the glory of God.
Here is what I mean.
Belichick taught us to do our jobs. Scripture commands us to work as unto the Lord, not for the approval of men. (Col. 3:23)
Belichick held Tom Brady to a higher standard than anyone. Scripture says to whom much is given, much is required. (Luke 12:48)
Belichick cut the cancer immediately, no matter the cost. Scripture says a little leaven leavens the whole lump. (Gal. 5:9)
Belichick took responsibility for every loss. Scripture calls leaders to be servants first. (Matt. 20:26)
Brady sacrificed personal stats for the team. Scripture says do nothing out of selfish ambition, but in humility consider others above yourself. (Phil. 2:3)
Brady could encourage a teammate and confront him in the same breath. Scripture says speak the truth in love. (Eph. 4:15)
These men did not know they were pulling from eternal, biblical commands. But the principles worked. They always work. Because truth is truth whether the man wielding it knows its source or not.
Now imagine this:
If these principles built a two-decade dynasty with men who did not know the Lord, what would God do through His church if we humbled ourselves and ran the same playbook?
What would happen in your marriage if you coached yourself harder than you coach anyone else?
What would happen in your home if you cut the cancers of laziness, passivity, and selfishness?
What would happen in your leadership if you stopped protecting your ego and started serving your team?
The blueprint is not new.
The playbook has been written for two thousand years.
The question is whether you are willing to run it.

Stop looking for a new framework.

Look at the intensity and focus he has in this endeavor! And the joy!!
His muscles show that he has been training his whole body for a long time, and when he trains, he trains hard.
(Check with your Physician before starting any exercise program. And, remember, studies show that normal people in their 90s can gain strength in just 6 weeks)
Earl Fee, aged 97, claims the M95 indoor 200m world record with an unprecedented time of 48.89 seconds, bettering the prior record by 1.51 seconds.

At 62, Clare Elms just became the oldest woman to ever run a sub-5 minute 1500m.
She did it into 20+ mph headwinds at Wimbledon on Wednesday night, wearing race number 62 to match her age. Eight of her ten rivals were young enough to be her grandkids. She got boxed in at the back of the pack for the first two laps, forced to run wide with no clean line through traffic. She was off pace at the bell. On the last lap she clawed her way past half the field, then turned into a headwind for the entire home straight.
She still crossed the line in 4:56.77, taking 0.08 seconds off her own world W60 record.
Most runners slow by about 1% a year after 60. Elms has run under 4:59 for the 1500m every single year since she turned 55, and somehow she keeps getting faster. She already owns 16 different UK records at 1500m and the mile across every age group from W45 to W60. This spring alone she has set world bests of 17:45 for 5km and 29:53 for 5 miles.
And she thinks she can go quicker still in better conditions later this season.
