Starting this year, Maine high school students can earn college credit before they even graduate.

University of Maine System will award up to eight college credits for microcredentials earned through JMG, becoming the first university system in the country to award credit for career readiness microcredentials earned in high school.

For many of the 13,000+ students we serve each year, college was never part of the plan, so leaving high school with credit already in hand in areas like leadership, financial literacy, and entrepreneurial mindset is a game-changer.

CEO Kim Acker Lipp said it best: "Many students can benefit. They're leaving high school with eight college credits that they've earned by attaining these credentials. That gives them something very valuable to take with them."

Inside Higher Ed takes a closer look at the collaboration and what it could mean for students in Maine and beyond.

Maine’s public universities will award up to eight credits for career-readiness microcredentials, giving students an early start toward a degree.

Preparing students for the future starts with investing in the people who make the work possible.

This week, the JMG team came together for our annual Workforce Development Summit at Sugarloaf Mountain. Specialists, Instructional Designers, Central Office staff, and the Executive Team were joined by invited guests and partners for a week of professional learning, collaboration, and preparation for the academic year ahead.

Throughout the summit, we shared ideas, explored new approaches, celebrated successes, and strengthened the relationships that support our work in schools and communities across Maine. We were grateful to welcome partners including Education Design Lab, FAME Maine, members of our Board of Directors, and other collaborators whose perspectives enriched our conversations.

As we begin a new academic year, we're proud of the dedication and expertise our team brings to communities across Maine. Together, they'll support more than 13,000 young people through our programs, experiences, and meaningful relationships, helping them build skills, earn credentials, explore career pathways, and achieve their goals.

What started in Maine is helping shape how schools prepare students for what's next across the country.

We're proud to see JMG's Competency to Credential Model featured in Open Campus' Mile Markers newsletter. The article highlights how Maine schools are helping students build and demonstrate the communication, leadership, teamwork, problem-solving, professionalism, and other durable skills that employers and colleges are looking for.

Proven in Maine and designed to scale, our Competency to Credential Model helps students build and demonstrate their skills through verifiable microcredentials. Through GenUS, this proven model is now being introduced to school systems beyond Maine while remaining grounded in the work that began here.

We're proud that our model, proven in Maine, is helping create new opportunities for students and informing how schools prepare the next generation for college, careers, and life.

Something I heard while listening to folks across Montana last month is that rural employers – from community banks to lumber mills – are seeking young people with proven soft skills. Just like corporate executives in bigger cities, managers in rural areas want to see students who show professio...
