Applications are now open for the 2026 Tuskegee University Mentoring Introduction to Aviation Science (MITAS) Summer Program for high school students.

The Mentoring Introduction to Aviation Science (MITAS) program is a one-week, on-campus summer experience offered by the Tuskegee University College of Engineering in collaboration with the Tuskegee Airmen Museum at Moton Field, along with industry and professional organizations. The program is designed for high school rising juniors and seniors and introduces students to various aspects of aviation and aerospace science. The primary goals of MITAS are to encourage underrepresented youth to remain engaged in school, consider careers in aviation and aerospace, and increase awareness among government and industry partners of the interests and needs of underrepresented students in these fields.

The MITAS curriculum explores topics such as aviation history, the physics of flight, aircraft propulsion and airframe structures, powering of aircraft, and autonomous systems. Students participate in hands-on learning experiences that include engine dissection, flight simulation, computer-aided design of aircraft components, fabrication of airplane wings using 3D printing, and the assembly and testing of model airplanes and rockets. These experiences are designed to provide both technical exposure and practical insight into aviation-related careers.
