CodeHoppers is back!

Last night marked the first session of our newly revamped CodeHoppers program, giving middle school students and their parents an opportunity to explore 3D printing through hands-on learning.

CodeHoppers introduces students in grades 6–8 to computer science and technology through activities including coding, cybersecurity, AI, Micro:bits, Raspberry Pi, Arduino and more.

Missed the first session? There’s still time to join us! Our next CodeHoppers session is Oct. 13 from 6–7:30 p.m. on Augusta University’s Summerville Campus.

The program is free, but registration is required and parents must remain with their students during each session.

We’re excited to continue creating opportunities for young learners to code, connect and empower! 💙🧡

Hey SCCS fam🐾! If you have a middle school student that’s interested in a stem program, you may want to check out CodeHoppers! It’s back and it’s free for boys and girls in grades 6-8! Our first session is on Sept. 22in University Hall, room 246! Students will learn about 3D printing, AI and of course block coding! All sessions are from 6pm - 7:30pm. Now parents, you will have to stay with your child the entire time, but trust us…it will be fun and you may learn something as well! Registration is required and seats are limited! The School of Computer and Cyber Sciences is happy to announce that Assistant Professor, Dr. Rizi, has been selected as the recipient of the 2026 Radio Club of America (RCA) Frank A. Gunther Award.

The Frank A. Gunther Award is named after the radio innovator and major contributor to military, aviation, and public safety communications.

Dr. Rizi is receiving the award in recognition of his 30 plus years of leadership and service across U.S. Naval Cryptology, Department of Defense cyber operations, and higher education.

Congratulations, Dr. Rizi on this remarkable achievement. The School of Computer and Cyber Sciences is honored to have you representing us.

🌟 Staff Spotlight: Karly Henson

Meet Karly Henson, Office Specialist for the School of Computer and Cyber Sciences!

Whether she's answering questions, supporting faculty and students, coordinating travel requests, or helping keep daily operations running smoothly, Karly plays an important role in keeping SCCS moving forward. She also supports the Information Systems & Security department and is currently tackling one of her favorite projects—reorganizing the school's shared Box drive.

One thing Karly wants people to know is that administrative staff support more than just faculty. They also work closely with students, staff, and visitors, helping behind the scenes to ensure everything runs as smoothly as possible.

🎉 Congratulations to Dr. Dariusz Kowalski!

The School of Computer and Cyber Sciences is proud to celebrate Dr. Dariusz Kowalski, professor of computer science, on officially receiving the 2026 Prize for Innovation in Distributed Computing at SIROCCO 2026.

This prestigious international award recognizes nearly two decades of contributions to distributed computing, a field that explores how computer systems communicate, coordinate and operate reliably in complex environments. Dr. Kowalski's research has helped advance understanding in areas such as wireless communications, network security and communication efficiency.

We are honored to have faculty whose research is making an impact around the world while also helping mentor and inspire the next generation of computer scientists here at Augusta University.

🔦 Faculty Spotlight: Dr. Hoda Maleki

At Augusta University's School of Computer and Cyber Sciences, Dr. Hoda Maleki, Associate Professor, leads the System Security and Applied Cryptography Lab (SYSSEClab), where graduate researchers are working to make computing more secure, private and trustworthy.

Supported by National Science Foundation-funded projects, SYSSEClab conducts research at the intersection of applied cryptography, system security and trustworthy AI. The lab's work includes privacy-preserving data analysis, secure computation, intrusion detection, blockchain-based security solutions and emerging challenges in AI security.

As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into software development and everyday technology, Dr. Maleki and her team are helping address critical questions surrounding privacy, security and trust. Their recent research, including work accepted to ARES 2026, examines the security risks associated with AI-generated software and autonomous AI systems.

Through innovative research and student mentorship, Dr. Maleki and SYSSEClab are helping shape the future of trustworthy computing.
