Hi all and happy late fourth!
We are missing our biomass team as they are on vacation this week. However, this is a perfect opportunity for an educational update. Pictured below is how the biomass team weighs four-foot sections of a tree’s main stem. Not only are these sections too heavy to lift by hand, but they are also too heavy for traditional scales to weigh! We use a Bobcat skid-steer loader retrofitted with a crane scale to lift and weigh each of the large sections. We hope you all had a great holiday weekend and thank you for keeping up with our project!

My project includes a survey about educating the public on the research being conducted here at W.K. Kellogg Experimental Forest. Hi all, a little update on what a few graduate students and I are doing out here in W.K. Kellogg Forest. Right now we’re are executing a destructive biomass sampling which we will later compare to the laser scanners biomass measurement. Some of you may have explored the laser scanner a little during the open house. Below you can see us collecting data from a couple of branches!

A kind reminder from our neighbors up the road at KBS.

There are many fine spots for snowmobiling in our area, but KBS grounds are not among them.

Please do not use snowmobiles at the Kellogg Bird Sanctuary, on Kellogg Farm fields, near the W.K. Kellogg Manor House and surrounding lands, or anywhere else marked as property of Kellogg Biological Station.

For your safety, the safety of KBS staff and residents, and for the protection of active research sites, we ask for your cooperation. Thank you.

We understand that there is some misinformation circulating related to the status of Kellogg Forest which has resulted in some frustrations.

The primary function of Kellogg Forest is to advance forestry research and extension efforts on behalf of Michigan State University. Kellogg Forest has provided public recreational access to responsible visitors and neighbors. We did recently upgrade the parking area and trail access due to increased vandalism and damage to critical research sites, among other issues. Rather than entirely closing public access to the forest, we have constructed a new parking lot and a new trail access point to continue public recreational use while minimizing disruption and safety to the research facilities, workshop, and equipment vicinities.

Please observe that the areas containing the buildings (research, office, shop, and house) and former public parking lot are now dedicated to research and educational initiatives and are no longer open to the general public.
