Today we honor Juneteenth, commemorating the day news of emancipation finally reached the last enslaved people in the United States in 1865.

This year, we invite you to take part in local celebrations and learning opportunities happening right here in Maine.

We’ve gathered a list of local Juneteenth events on the UMA Heritage Month Calendar to help you connect with your community and honor this historic day: https://ow.ly/aXsR50Z9E12

In observation of this national holiday, the University is closed today.

Over the past year, we have celebrated 60 years of UMA through the voices and stories of the people who make this community what it is.

From students and alumni to faculty, staff, and community members, this anniversary year reminded us that UMA’s story has always been about people: the lives changed here, the connections built here, and the impact that continues far beyond our campuses.

Together, we reflected on our history, shared community stories, preserved memories, and celebrated the many moments that have shaped us, but this celebration was never only about looking back.

As UMA continues to grow, innovate, and expand opportunities for learners across Maine and beyond, this anniversary year also reminded us of the possibilities ahead.

Thank you to everyone who shared their stories, memories, photos, and voices with us throughout this special year.

Cheers to 60 years of UMA, and to the future we are building together. 🎊
