The way a young man communicates, responds, listens, and treats others can shape the impression he leaves long after the conversation ends.
Etiquette is not about being perfect. It’s about developing the confidence, awareness, and character to navigate different spaces well.

🌱 Connections Matter and So Does Being Intentional About Learning.
I recently had the opportunity to attend the Connections Matter Training hosted by Resilient Communities of East Georgia, and I walked away with an even greater appreciation for the power of relationships, connection, and supportive communities in the lives of children, teens, and families.
I attended this training intentionally because my work with young people extends across several areas.
Through Cheryl’s Courtesy Academy, my work as a speech-language pathologist, and my involvement with community youth organizations and youth advocacy, I regularly interact with young people from different backgrounds, experiences, abilities, and circumstances.
If I am going to serve them well, I believe it is important to continually expand my knowledge beyond my own areas of expertise.
The training reinforced something that is important in every aspect of my work: behavior is communication, relationships matter, and connection can be a powerful part of building resilience. Before we can teach a skill, redirect a behavior, build confidence, or encourage leadership, we must recognize the value of creating environments where young people feel seen, heard, supported, and respected.
As professionals and community leaders, we should never become so comfortable with what we already know that we stop learning. Every training, conversation, and opportunity to gain a different perspective gives us another tool to better serve those entrusted to our care and influence.
Whether I am working with a child in therapy, teaching etiquette and confidence, mentoring young people, or serving alongside organizations committed to youth development, my goal remains the same: to be intentional about helping young people become confident, resilient, effective communicators and future leaders.
I’m grateful for opportunities like this that remind us that sometimes the greatest impact begins with something very simple: connection. Because connections really do matter.

Parents, there comes a point when support has to shift from stepping in to stepping back.
As parents, we naturally want to advocate for our children. But part of preparing them for adulthood is teaching them how to advocate for themselves. Navigating an interview, asking for feedback, handling rejection, communicating with a supervisor, and even dealing with being terminated are all part of developing professional maturity.
There’s a difference between supporting your child and speaking for your child. At some point, we have to trust that the lessons we’ve taught them will carry them into rooms we cannot and probably should not enter with them.
Prepare them. Coach them. Encourage them. But allow them to show up for themselves.
