Vocal Lesson in Real Time Feedback with my lovely student Riley 🎤

I know some of you have been wondering what I’ve been up too. This is what’s been taking my time away. 🥰🙈

In this lesson we are working on “Don’t Do It For Me Anymore” by . Riley has been working so hard to achieve that twang belt on the chorus of this song.

So in this lesson you will be able to watch her achieve her goals in realtime.

We explore the concepts of transitioning from Head Voice to Twang. Many singers need to have that vocal twang to produce the resonance in their voice so that they aren’t straining singing higher.

Vocal twang happens when the muscle called “AES” aryepiglottic sphincter muscle narrows above the vocal folds. When this muscle narrows it increases the boost (volume harmonics) giving it a brighter sound & ring when hitting high notes.

Imagine the sound of a baby. 🎶🎤❤️💕

Mehari has been stepping into a new arena and wanting to access the higher parts of his voice. I never push my students away from anything they would like to sing but I make it work for them..

In this lesson we focused on making sound instead of focusing on hitting the pitches. This helps students feel the flow without focusing on nailing the pitches or hitting higher notes.

Sometimes we have to Relax and just Flow.

Next we added twang in the voice. Vocal twang is a bright, buzzy, ringing quality in the voice that helps it cut through without you having to push or strain.

Instead of me telling Mehari to narrow his aryepiglottic sphincter muscle, I mimicked the sound of a winey child and this helped him achieve the sound/resonance.

Straw phonation is aka semi occluded vocal tract exercises which simply means to partially close the vocal tract/ mouth to create vibrations and back pressure on the vocal folds. There are TONSSSS Of Benefits using this technique and it can be used before & after singing as a warmup & vocal cool down.
