Little Lagoon Preservation Society Delivers Oyster Spat To 65 Gardens For Restoration Program 06/17/2026

Things are moving along the coast! Dr. P.J. Waters and our Marine Extension and Resource Center team and volunteers delivered the baby oysters to local gardens. This is critical work to not only raise the oysters, but study them and oversee their maturity.

The oysters from this process are a keystone to our commercial seafood industry and marine conservation efforts. This goes directly into repopulating our coastal estuaries, filtering vital water habitats, and providing structural habitats for marine life.

Little Lagoon Preservation Society Delivers Oyster Spat To 65 Gardens For Restoration Program The Little Lagoon Preservation Society (LLPS) received an oyster spat delivery on Tuesday to help with Auburn University's Restoration Oyster Program. A peak behind the curtain of what it takes to produce the catfish of tomorrow. It’s a process that starts today. It’s the result of long hours, numerous hands, and a unique system that will eventually lead to thousands of fish necessary to feed the region and provide invaluable research directly from SFAAS.

It's hatching time! This was some our students' first times getting hands-on experience with fish reproduction and early life care. New eggs means the chance to learn more about the cycle of life and how to support aquaculture research in areas like fish health, nutrition, genetics and production systems.

Harvest days require early mornings, teamwork, patience, careful handling, and a real understanding of the fish and systems we study. It takes a village and we have one of the best villages in the country!

What many don’t know is that some hybrid catfish are growing too large too fast, which cuts into local farm profits.

How? Oversized fish eat feed, prey on smaller fish, and are worth significantly less at processing.

Alabama producers are taking this hit and Auburn is trying to solve this problem through research and outreach, studying the fish and working directly with farmers to test practical solutions. SFAAS is not just describing an issue. Together, Alabama’s catfish industry is working to eliminate one of its most expensive production challenges for all.
