Heating season is right around the corner!

With heating season approaching, now is a great time to make sure your crews are confident and competent with their 4-gas meters.

Fingerlakes Fire Training’s 4-Gas Meter Training goes beyond simply turning the meter on. We cover:

• How multi-gas meters work
• Meter functions and limitations
• What gases your meter detects
• What to meter for
• How and where to meter
• When to meter during an incident
• Understanding and interpreting readings
• Applying meter readings to fireground decisions

The class finishes with realistic scenarios that challenge your crews to work through different situations, interpret their readings, and determine the appropriate actions.

Don’t wait until the middle of a CO or gas emergency to figure out your meter.

Contact us today for a quote for our Firefighter Survival Competency Training!

We bring the training directly to your department. Our instructors will provide all required training props and set up our portable competency course right inside your apparatus bays.

Firefighters will receive instruction and hands-on practice in individual firefighter survival skills before being tested on those skills through our portable course. The program focuses on horizontal survival techniques, SCBA and mask confidence, restricted-profile maneuvers, entanglement hazards, wall breaches, emergency escape techniques, and operating effectively in challenging environments.

Each firefighter who successfully completes the program will receive a Certificate of Completion documenting the horizontal firefighter survival skills completed during the training.

Departments can also add vertical firefighter survival and escape skills when an appropriate elevated window and approved anchor location are available at the training site.

This past Monday night, Instructors McNabb and Burns worked with the Sennett and Throop Fire Departments on simulated structure fire responses.

Crews arrived at simulated fires and worked through realistic first-due operations, including 360° size-ups, hoseline deployment, searches for trapped victims, and fire attack. The drill also included a command component focused on continuous size-up, crew management, incident responsibilities, accountability, and managing emergency situations involving MAYDAYs and missing personnel.

Both departments have been working hard with us since the spring to improve their fireground skills, efficiency, and confidence and it truly showed this past week.

Excellent job to the members of both departments for your continued dedication to training and improving your skills. IT SHOWS!

Last weekend, Instructor McNabb had the opportunity to present Residential Search Operations at the Old Forge Firefighter Drill School. The class was attended by 58 firefighters from departments across New York State, all focused on improving one of the most important functions we perform on the fireground—searching for and rescuing trapped occupants.

This lecture combines data and information from the Firefighter Rescue Survey and UL FSRI research with real-world fireground experience to provide firefighters with an informative, practical approach to residential search operations. The program focuses on aggressive, purposeful search techniques, victim survivability, search priorities, decision-making, and tactics designed to give trapped occupants the greatest opportunity for survival.

At Fingerlakes Fire Training, we believe aggressive firefighting must be supported by training, education, science, and experience. Understanding where victims are found, how conditions impact survivability, and how our tactics affect the fire environment allows firefighters to make better decisions when seconds matter.

Thank you to the Old Forge Drill School for the opportunity to present, the 58 firefighters who attended and invested their time in becoming better prepared to serve their communities, and to Instructor Jessie for the pictures as well as sitting at our booth at the firehouse.

🔹 How multi-gas meters work
🔹 Proper meter operation and use
🔹 Understanding O₂, CO, H₂S and LEL readings
🔹 How to properly interpret readings
🔹 Understanding alarms and changing atmospheric conditions
🔹 Applying meter readings to real-world emergency responses

Carrying a gas meter is one thing. Understanding what it's telling you is what matters.

With summer coming to an end and another New York winter approaching, fire departments will soon see an increase in responses to motor vehicle accidents and other roadway emergencies.

Our Traffic Management for Emergency Responders class is designed to help firefighters better understand their role in creating a safer environment while operating on the roadway.

Responding to the initial incident is only part of the challenge. Protecting firefighters, EMS personnel, law enforcement, tow operators, victims, and motorists from secondary crashes is critical.

This class focuses on the fundamentals of safely managing roadway incidents, including apparatus positioning, establishing a safe work area, traffic control, responder visibility, scene organization, and reducing the risk of secondary collisions.

One of the most important subjects a firefighter can study and understand is fire behavior.

Firefighters need to understand how a fire develops, how heat and smoke move through a compartment or building, and what those conditions are telling them. Recognizing changes in fire conditions can directly influence decisions involving fire attack, ventilation, search, flow paths, and firefighter positioning.

The fireground is constantly giving us information. The better we understand what we are seeing, the better decisions we can make.
