Now, he’s sharing that same passion through music education.

Join us in congratulating, Dr. Lizzy Harkey, who recently defended her dissertation in Secondary Mathematics Education. 👏
Her study explored middle grades mathematics teachers’ experiences implementing improvement science methods, including Plan-Do-Study-Act cycles (PDSA Cycles; Bryk et al., 2015) with scaffolded support from an instructional coach, and how these experiences impacted the teachers' use of the Mathematics Teaching Practices (MTPs; National Council of Teachers of Mathematics [NCTM], 2014) and their adoption of an inquiry stance (Farmer et al., 2003) toward their continued professional learning.
At the College of Education, we provide many educational opportunities outside the classroom. Doctoral student, Andrea Forehand, recently placed 3rd in the Oral Presentation category at the University-Wide Graduate Student Research Symposium! 🎉
Her presentation, “Beyond Metacognitive Awareness: The Central Role of the Phonological Lexicon in Early Reading,” is shedding new light on how young readers develop and what truly drives early literacy.

Teacher. Mentor. Composer. Vocalist. Dr. Jane Kuehne brings the full range of her musical life into everything she does at Auburn.
As Associate Professor of Music Education and Graduate Program Officer, Dr. Kuehne's path to Auburn winds through many places. She joined the Auburn family in 2005 and hasn't looked back.
At Auburn, she teaches both undergraduate and graduate students, supervises field work, and guides graduate research. Her dedication has been recognized twice over: she's received the Outstanding Graduate Mentor Award — selected by her own graduate students — and the Leischuck Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award from the College of Education, chosen by her peers. Those honors extend beyond Auburn, too. Dr. Kuehne has been named Outstanding Alumna by both the University of Texas at San Antonio and her high school alma mater in Georgetown, Texas. Outside the university, she serves as director of music at her church, St. Michael Parish.

From the concert hall to the football field, Associate Professor Dr. Guy Harrison is building a musical community that reaches far beyond the classroom.
He directs the Auburn University Symphony Orchestra and teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in music and music education. His work spans the classroom, the concert hall, and the broader community, with a particular commitment to building robust string and orchestral programs that serve students at every level.
Outside of his teaching and conducting responsibilities, Dr. Harrison is actively involved in youth orchestra outreach and string music-access program development, working to expand access to high-quality orchestral experiences for young musicians in the region.🧡

After nearly 30 years of service on the Auburn Curriculum and Teaching faculty, Dr. Nancy Barry is retiring with a heart full of gratitude and a mind still hungry to learn.
From her beginning as a K-12 music teacher in Rutherford County, TN, to earning her PhD in Music Education from Florida State University, to a Presidential Professorship at the University of Oklahoma — Barry's journey has always circled back to two things: her love for teaching and Auburn.
“When I think about the hundreds of undergraduate students and graduate students I've worked with across my career and multiply that by the number of students they will work with across their careers, the opportunity to impact the future is enormous and humbling,” she shared.
Retirement is bittersweet, but she's looking forward to pursuing her own research, completing long-awaited writing projects, and continuing to share the joy of music through community work. 🦅
