As part of the 2026 Japan and Spain study abroad program, students traveled from Japan to Spain to explore how history, culture and innovation shape the built environment.

In Barcelona, students experienced the city's rich architectural heritage through guided visits to the Gothic Quarter, Sagrada Familia and other iconic landmarks, examining historic preservation, adaptive reuse and the influence of Antoni Gaudí's visionary designs on modern architecture.

In Valencia, the program focused on cultural heritage, sustainable urban development and innovative construction. Students visited historic sites including the Valencia Cathedral, El Patriarca and Hospital de San Juan, while also exploring contemporary architecture, local construction practices and the city's approach to preserving its rich architectural legacy.

The Spain experience also included collaborative learning with faculty and students at the Universitat Politècnica de València UPV, where Auburn students presented their final projects and engaged in meaningful academic and cultural exchange. A heartfelt thank you to UPV Professors María José Viñals and Luis Cortés, along with their colleagues and students, for their outstanding hospitality and for making this unforgettable learning experience possible.

Scott Clark, a 1985 graduate, has been recognized for his commitment to service and leadership throughout the construction industry.

The Associated General Contractors of Georgia awarded Clark the 2026 Skill, Integrity & Responsibility (SIR) Award, the organization’s highest honor for the state’s commercial construction industry leaders. Presented in June during the organization’s annual convention, the award honors individuals’ exceptional service and contributions to the construction industry and their communities.

students are currently participating in a study abroad program in Japan and Spain, gaining firsthand exposure to global construction practices, technology, culture, heritage preservation, and the built environment.

Led by Professors Junshan Liu and Salman Azhar, students visited major construction and infrastructure sites in Japan, explored disaster resilience and earthquake-resistant design, engaged with industry professionals, and experienced Japan’s rich architectural and cultural heritage through visits to iconic destinations including Mount Fuji, historic temples and shrines, and the cities of Tokyo, Kyoto, and Kobe.

The group has now begun the second leg of the program in Spain, where the focus shifts to historic preservation, adaptive reuse, and the connection between heritage and sustainable development.

students kicked off their summer by traveling abroad in the United Kingdom!

After exam week in May, students departed the U.S. and spent two weeks exploring the cities of Edinburgh, York and London. The course emphasized field-based learning in the UK, with a focus on the historical, cultural and regulatory factors that shape the conservation of built heritage.

“I hope students walked away with a deeper appreciation for how the built environment tells the story of a society,” says faculty director of the trip, Lauren Redden. “By engaging directly with centuries-old structures, they experienced history as something active and relevant.”

A group of students have been traveling abroad in Europe!

Trip highlights so far include a tour of the Notre Dame in Paris, where students learned more about the cathedral’s restoration efforts, a visit to the Normandy American Cemetery on Memorial Day and a construction site visit in London.

Industry Executive Board member Nancy Juneau has been elected to the National Academy of Construction (NAC)’s Class of 2026!

Juneau, CEO of Juneau Construction Company, was elected by her peers and will be recognized during the NAC’s Annual Meeting on Sept. 25, 2026, in Nashville, TN.

With years in the industry, graduate student Oscar Miguel Pagan-Santana believes construction management is far more than schedules and budgets.

After more than two decades with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Headquarters, he understands how early decisions in planning, estimating and contract administration shape a project’s success long before construction begins. That mindset led him to pursue the Executive Certificates program in the McWhorter School of Building Science, where he is strengthening the leadership and technical skills that have defined his distinguished career.
