Studying, thinking about, and doing landscape architecture at Auburn University in the Master of Landscape Architecture Program.

05/11/2026

The School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape Architecture (APLA) at Auburn University, a comprehensive land-grant and research institution, is seeking applicants for Visiting Assistant Professor in Landscape Architecture.  This is a one-year (nine month/two semester), non-tenure track position commencing in August 2027.

We offer both an undergraduate degree (BLA) and a graduate degree (MLA).  Grounded in the state of Alabama, we focus attention on places where the richness, complexity, and messiness of landscape is prominently felt, including post-industrial cities, infrastructural landscapes, rural landscapes, and coasts.  Our curriculum places special emphasis on the fundamentals of design process, fieldwork, landscape advocacy, research by design, and the role of landscape architecture in an expanded field of allied disciplines and concerns.

The Landscape Architecture Programs seek a candidate with a strong interest in teaching both design studios and seminar courses.  Candidates should have the capacity to teach at least some portion of: a.) our core studio sequences (Studio I-IV and Workshop I-II in the BLA program; Studio I-IV in the MLA program) and b.) our core subject tracks (construction; dynamic systems; graphic studies; history, theory, and practice; plants).  There may also be opportunities to teach elective seminars or advanced studios within the Alabama Lab.

We’ve been meaning to share this earlier, but better late than never, right? The Alabama Lab design/build studio crew have been working feverishly in the this semester. After much exploration, they identified three critical & catalytic spaces to install within the 250 acres site. Allow me to introduce you to the Kudzu Room, the Bamboo Room, and the Elm Room. This crew has been cranking, and now they’re making their final tweaks in preparation for their final review this Wednesday. Here are a few teasers from their process…

We did a thing!!

The Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (BLA) program has just been officially awarded initial accreditation by the Landscape Architectural Accreditation Board (LAAB)!

This professional milestone could only be possible due to the hard work of all our faculty, staff, and of course…students! Notably, the program was awarded accreditation with zero determinations of non-compliance!

Enjoy these exhibit photos showcasing student work from our accreditation exhibit last Fall!

BLA BLA BLA!!

Look out! The Alabama Lab design/build studio crew got their hands on a slightly larger tool for some of their ongoing work in the this week. They’re making some lovely progress now. More to come soon…

Our BLA3 students have crossed the line…that is multiple state “lines” as they are in Chicago IL for a field studies trip this week! 🙀

Wow…we really picked the best time to visit as a burst of freezing weather hit the city on our scheduled visit! And yet we are managing to have a fun time still! 🥶

Highlights include seeing some great seminal projects like the Riverwalk and Millennium Park. Students also enjoyed sliding at Maggie Daley! We also were fortunate to have office visits with and - thank so much to our hosts there for sharing their time and wisdom to our students.

Some snapshots from a small, quick project where we experimented with 3D scanners! Students explored “reality capture” in our Advanced Landscape Representation seminar, scanning last year’s Feral Workshop Experiment Garden (built in collaboration with ).

Scan you believe it?? 🙀 Check out these images of students at work, as well as the resulting as-built drawings!

The MLA students are buried deep in their research of Manitou Cave in Fort Payne AL, as part of a seminar by Julia Hedges. Karst formations like this are prominent in Alabama, and students are crawling through ways to document and visualize these beautiful underground landscapes.

Will they cave under the pressure this task? Is there light at the end of the tunnel?

Additionally, Frank Hu (Landscape Architecture) and Shadi Alathamneh (Building Science) joined as part of a collaborative research grant to LiDAR scan the cave.

Thanks to Missy Tuner for being our tour guide!

Annual burn day at the Alabama Meadows

This year, we handed the burn over to students in Alternative Methods 02 [with ]. The sun was out and the fuels were dry!

Thanks, as always, to Dr. John Kush for joining us in the field.

Just over a week ago students in the Gulf Adaptation Design Studios took their first fieldwork trip to Mobile, AL to experience the intertwined issues that they are working on this semester. Landscape Architecture students in the Alabama Lab, led by Isaac Cohen , Architecture students led by Aurelie Frolet , and Graphic Design students led by Devon Ward got to engage in a variety of activities over three days. They met with the Mobile Baykeeper and ACES ; toured the Lightening Point Shoreline Restoration Project and the C.C. Williams Wastewater Treatment Plant; and took a boat ride on the Delta Explorer through the Mobile-Tensaw River Delta and down the Mobile River, getting a close look at the Port of Mobile and McDuffie Island, where many of the students projects are focused this year. They also got to enjoy the sights, sounds, and food of Mardi Gras! We are excited to share more of this interdisciplinary work that is funded by
