When Bennie Bray '72 describes Auburn in one word, he chooses family.

Through his leadership, philanthropy, and mentorship, he's helped strengthen that family for generations of Auburn students.

Congratulations to our Lifetime Achievement Award recipient.

Making the Best of the Rest 06/01/2026

Purpose is one of the best defenses against cognitive decline. Nearly half of dementia risk is linked to lifestyle choices.

Auburn researcher Gabrielle Pfund studies how sense of purpose affects cognitive health.

People with meaningful goals and social connections stay mentally stimulated longer.

“Purpose keeps people cognitively engaged as they age.”

Making the Best of the Rest To enjoy our remaining years, we need to understand how our bodies change over time and practice habits to keep us running at an optimal level.

Some of the best pairings don’t show up on a menu.

A great red with fries. Sparkling with popcorn. Sometimes the combinations that surprise you are the ones you remember most.

That same spirit of experimentation is part of what defines the 1856 experience for Auburn students and guests alike.

We’d love to hear from you—what’s an unexpected pairing you enjoy?

Wine doesn’t have to feel complicated to be meaningful.

At Auburn, students in the 1856 residency program learn through experience—tasting, asking questions, and building confidence along the way.

Master Sommelier Thomas Price, who works with students in the Horst Schulze School of Hospitality, teaching Beverage Appreciation courses – shares tips on pairings and more so you too can be wine savvy.

It’s a hands-on approach that stays with students long after they leave the classroom.

We Were CAPERS 05/25/2026

Before women were fully integrated into military organizations, Auburn students were already leading the way.

The Coed Affiliates of Pershing Rifles—known as CAPERS—built a legacy of discipline, service, and leadership on the Plains that shaped generations of women. From supporting ROTC cadets to earning national recognition, their impact reached far beyond campus.

Their story is a powerful reminder that leadership doesn’t wait for permission.

Read more about CAPERS and the women who helped redefine what service looks like:

We Were CAPERS From the 1960s to the 1980s, Auburn’s all-female military auxiliary instilled discipline and service, paving the way for future equality in the nation’s armed forces and preparing them for a lifetime of success.

Start with what you like. That’s where it begins.

Inside Auburn’s 1856 residency, wine pairing is approached the same way—through exploration, curiosity, and a willingness to try something new. Some of the best combinations aren’t planned at all.

It’s one of the many ways students are learning to think differently about hospitality, experience, and craft.

On this Military Monday, we honor Eugene B. Sledge ’49, whose Bible—integral to his renowned World War II memoir “With the Old Breed”—was formally added to the Library of Congress last summer. His son, Henry Sledge ’88, continues to explore the profound impact that wartime experiences have had on their family legacy.
