Camp Create 2026: A Week of Innovation and Creativity!

What an incredible week it has been at Camp Create!

Over the past several days, students explored new ideas, solved problems, and built lasting friendships. Through creative challenges, modern technology, and hands on making, campers brought their ideas to life from initial concepts all the way to our final showcase.

Learning Pathways and Activities:

Arcade and Video Game Design

Students learned the fundamentals of game logic, mechanics, and interactive storytelling. Participants worked with digital tools to code, design, and play test their own custom video games.

Box Breakers

Participants challenged traditional design boundaries by turning simple raw materials into complex functional structures. This track focused on creative thinking, structural integrity, and rapid prototyping.

Cosplay and Character Design

Campers explored character creation by combining costume design, prop building, and artistic craft. Students learned how to bring fictional concepts to life using lightweight materials and creative construction techniques.

Events like Camp Create highlight the deep impact of makerspace based education. Students do not just learn how to operate tools. They learn how to communicate, adapt when things do not work the first time, and collaborate to turn raw concepts into real objects.

Celebrating Our ESY Summer Camp Community!

As our Extended School Year (ESY) Summer Camp comes to a close, we are looking forward to celebrating a wonderful summer of learning, friendship, fun, and memorable experiences at our ESY Open House this Friday!

First and foremost, we want to extend our heartfelt appreciation to our entire ESY educational staff. To our teachers, teaching assistants, related service providers, support staff, and everyone who worked behind the scenes to make this summer successful—thank you!

Your dedication, patience, creativity, compassion, and commitment to our students made an incredible difference. The time and energy you invested in creating meaningful learning experiences, encouraging participation, celebrating accomplishments, and helping each student feel supported did not go unnoticed. You are truly valuable members of our educational community, and we are so impressed by the difference you made in the lives of our students this summer. Your work is a wonderful reminder of the impact caring and dedicated educators can have.

We would also like to sincerely thank the many community members and local organizations who helped make this summer very special for our students. Their generosity, time, talents, and support created additional opportunities for our students to learn, explore, connect, and enjoy being together.

Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES was proud to host a three-day Micron Chip Camp giving students an exciting opportunity to explore semiconductor technology, engineering, advanced manufacturing, and the many career possibilities connected to these growing fields.

Throughout the camp, students experienced firsthand how science, technology, engineering, and mathematics come together to create the technologies we use every day. Through hands-on activities and challenges, campers developed skills in problem-solving, collaboration, creativity, communication, and critical thinking.

Students built Squishy Circuits to explore electrical concepts, created Lego AI projects, designed Binary Resistor Bracelets to learn about coding and binary systems, and participated in Reverse Taboo challenges. They also explored breadboarding, Micro:bit coding, PC dissection, and soldering.

With eight different activity groups, students had the opportunity to try new things, work with technology, solve problems, and discover the excitement of engineering and innovation.

Experiences like Micron Chip Camp also highlight the opportunities available through Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES Career & Technical Education programs. CTE gives students the opportunity to develop practical, hands-on skills while exploring careers connected to today’s workforce.

One example is the Computer Systems & Network Administration program where students develop skills in computer systems, networking, cybersecurity, and emerging technologies.

We are proud to help students explore their interests, discover new possibilities, and begin building the skills they need for tomorrow’s careers!

Career Connections 2026 Spotlight: Criminal Justice

Our Career Connections Summer Camp Spotlight Series concludes with Criminal Justice, where students explored careers in law enforcement, forensic science, and the legal system through engaging, hands-on experiences.

Led by instructor Stacey Jones, campers participated in crime scene investigations, evidence collection activities, forensic exercises, and mock trial proceedings while learning about policing and the judicial process. These interactive experiences strengthened critical thinking, communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills while providing a realistic introduction to careers in public safety.

Throughout the week, students had the opportunity to learn directly from local law enforcement professionals. A visit from Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck gave campers the chance to learn about the responsibilities of serving and protecting the community while exploring careers in law enforcement. Students also welcomed members of the Auburn Police Department, including the Emergency Response Team and Drone Unit, who demonstrated specialized equipment, shared how technology supports modern policing, and offered an inside look at the teamwork required to keep communities safe.

The Criminal Justice summer camp also introduces students to the Criminal Justice program at Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES Career & Technical Education (CTE). Students entering their junior or senior year of high school can continue building their knowledge and skills through hands-on learning while exploring careers in law enforcement, forensic science, corrections, emergency services, and the legal field.

Career Connections 2026 Spotlight: Film Production

Our Career Connections Summer Camp Spotlight Series continues with Film Production, where students explored the creative process of bringing a story to life through hands-on filmmaking.

Led by instructor Terry Cuddy, campers worked together to write scripts, develop storyboards, film scenes, edit footage, and publish their completed short films. Along the way, they rotated through a variety of production roles, including actor, director, boom operator, and slate operator, gaining firsthand experience with the teamwork and creativity behind every successful production.

Through these real-world experiences, students strengthened their communication, collaboration, problem-solving, and technical skills while discovering the many steps involved in producing a film from concept to completion.

The Film Production summer camp also introduces students to the Graphic Design & New Media program at Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES Career & Technical Education (CTE). Students entering their junior or senior year of high school can continue building their creative and technical skills through hands-on learning in graphic design, digital photography, animation, video production, web design, marketing, and other digital media disciplines.

A Milestone Worth Celebrating!

The Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES Practical Nursing Program is proud to announce that the Class of 2025–2026 achieved a 100% first-time pass rate on the NCLEX-PN licensure examination!

This marks the first time since 2018 that every graduate who took the NCLEX-PN passed on their first attempt. This is an incredible accomplishment that reflects the dedication, perseverance, and commitment of our students, along with the unwavering support of our faculty and staff.

Becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse requires determination, resilience, and countless hours of classroom instruction, hands-on skills practice, and clinical experience. We couldn't be prouder of this outstanding group of graduates as they begin their careers as Licensed Practical Nurses, making a difference in the lives of patients, families, and communities.

Congratulations to the Class of 2025–2026 on this historic achievement! Your hard work has paid off, and we look forward to seeing the positive impact you will have on the future of healthcare.

Career Connections 2026 Spotlight: Conservation Corps

Our Career Connections Summer Camp Spotlight Series continues with Conservation Corps, where students explored environmental careers through hands-on learning and real-world experiences throughout the Auburn area.

Led by instructors Emily Weaver, Erik Untiedt, Caleb Bolha, and Gary Leader, campers spent four days working alongside local experts while discovering the importance of environmental stewardship, urban forestry, and natural resource conservation.

Throughout the week, students:

Learned how trees help reduce the urban heat island effect while identifying tree species.

Monitored stream health and aquatic ecosystems at Fillmore Glen State Park.

Practiced tree planting techniques and explored the value of community gardens.

Helped protect native habitats by removing invasive species at Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge.

The Conservation Corps camp was made possible through funding from the USDA Forest Service Urban and Community Forestry Program in partnership with the Trust for Public Land and the City of Auburn.

Today's spotlight also features our Career Connections Auto Repair summer camp, where students explore automotive technology through hands-on learning while discovering careers connected to our Exploration in Construction and Mechanical Trades program at Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES.

Under the guidance of instructor Scott Martin, campers are learning industry safety standards and developing foundational electrical skills through hands-on wiring activities. By learning proper wiring techniques, identifying the purpose of different wires, and following industry safety practices, students are building knowledge that's essential across many construction and mechanical trades.

These foundational concepts help students understand how electrical systems work while reinforcing the importance of safety, accuracy, and problem-solving skills that are valuable whether working on vehicles, equipment, or other mechanical and construction projects.

Career Connections gives students the opportunity to discover potential career pathways through real-world, hands-on learning. For students entering their junior or senior year of high school, the Exploration in Construction and Mechanical Trades program at Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES provides the opportunity to continue building these skills while exploring automotive technology, electrical systems, welding, construction, and other skilled trades.
