The Alabama Prison Arts + Education Project (APAEP) is collecting book donations to help build and expand educational libraries in correctional facilities across Alabama.

Books provide opportunities to explore new ideas, engage with different perspectives, and support lifelong learning. By donating quality books, you're helping strengthen library collections in correctional facilities across Alabama, making more books available to readers throughout those communities.

We welcome books in new or gently used condition that are clean, complete, and ready for another reader.

We're currently seeking:
• Contemporary fiction (published within the last 15 years when possible)
• Classics
• Poetry
• Biography & memoir
• History
• Science & nature
• Art & design
• Regional writing
• International authors
• Large-print books
• Paperback editions

Please note: We are unable to accept:
• Hardback or spiral-bound books
• Academic journals
• Highly specialized or outdated academic textbooks
• Cookbooks
• Travel guides
• Reader's Digest condensed books
• True crime
• Romance novels
• Religious materials that promote one faith tradition over another

Now Seeking Community Education Instructors in STEM and Related Disciplines

Inspire Curiosity. Share Knowledge. Expand Access to Learning.

Do you enjoy making science, technology, engineering, and mathematics accessible to others?

The Alabama Prison Arts + Education Project (APAEP) is seeking educators, professionals, and practitioners with expertise in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and related disciplines to teach through our Community Education program in Alabama correctional facilities.

We are looking for instructors who can make STEM engaging through discussion, observation, practical applications, and place-based learning. Successful courses encourage curiosity, critical thinking, problem-solving, and scientific inquiry while making STEM concepts relevant and accessible to adult learners.

We are especially interested in educators who can connect STEM to Alabama's people, places, landscapes, industries, and natural environments. Courses that explore the state's ecology, geology, waterways, weather, wildlife, engineering, and mathematical concepts through local examples are strongly encouraged.

Ecology of Alabama

The Flora and Fauna of Alabama

Natural History of the Deep South

Alabama Rivers and Watersheds

Weather and Climate in the Southeast

Forest Ecology and Conservation

Human Biology

Astronomy and the Night Sky

Scientific Observation and Inquiry

These are only examples—we welcome creative course proposals from educators across STEM and related disciplines.

Teaching with APAEP

Community Education classes are typically taught over a 12-week semester and meet once each week for approximately 2½ hours. Classes are discussion-based and designed for adult learners in correctional settings.

Because classroom technology is not available, instructors should be prepared to teach using photocopied materials, demonstrations, observation, discussion, and other adaptable teaching methods. We value courses that emphasize curiosity, exploration, and scientific thinking rather than specialized equipment or laboratory experiences.

Whether your background is in science, engineering, mathematics, environmental education, natural history, or another STEM-related field, we invite you to share your knowledge and help expand educational opportunities for incarcerated students across Alabama.

Seeking Instructors | Reading Unseen America

The Alabama Prison Arts + Education Project (APAEP) is seeking instructors to lead a NEA Big Read literature and discussion initiative inside Alabama correctional facilities.

This discussion-based series will explore themes of:

rural American identity
labor and economic hardship
generational trauma and endurance
community and belonging
perceptions of Appalachia and place
historically overlooked voices in American literature

Featured texts include:

Burning Bright

We are seeking instructors who value:

discussion-based, student-facing learning
community-centered education
structured and collaborative classroom environments
critical engagement through literature and dialogue
Courses will take place within The ADOC across Alabama during Fall 2026 and Spring 2027.
