Carl Cunningham Jr., Ph.D., is a Mobile, Alabama native and is a graduate of Murphy High School. Dr. Cunningham received his undergraduate degree from Jackson State University in Urban Studies. in Higher Education Administration, from the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. While in Hattiesburg he worked and did research in the Geography department and also worked
as the National Pan-Hellenic Council Advisor for the Greek Life Department at Southern Miss. Carl worked at the University of South Alabama (USA) for 12 years, where he served as the Director of Multicultural Student Affairs, Geography While at the University of South Alabama, Carl advised the University of South Alabama National Pan-Hellenic Council, Men and Women of Excellence, ABK Honor Society, and the African American Student Association. He also plays an active role with University of South Alabama where he is a part of the NCAA Champs Life Skills program and working with the student athletes on campus. Carl intensely worked with the USA Recruitment and Admission Offices in sponsoring recruitment events. Carl was recruited in 2013 by then President, Christopher Brown, of Alcorn State University, to serve as his Vice-President of Student Success and Enrollment Management. After spending a year at Alcorn State, Carl returned back to the Mobile area where he is now working as the Regional Director for TRiO Programs and the Director of Student Support Services at Coastal Alabama Community College. Carl is an active member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. He currently serves as the Guide Right/Mobile Kappa League Director for the Mobile Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Carl has also served as the National Guide Right Director Vice-Chairman for Kappa Alpha Psi. Carl trains members of Kappa Alpha Psi to serve as advisors for the all Guide Right/Kappa League programs in the fraternity. There are currently 12,000 young men being served through the Kappa League programs nationally. The Kappa League programs focuses on ‘5 Phases” which are: 1) Self-Identify, 2) Training, 3) Competition, 4) Social, and 5) Health Education. Through Carl’s work with the Kappa League program, he has built partnerships with Big Brothers Big Sisters, Open Society, National Association of College Admissions Counselors, Department of Education, America’s Promise, Leadership Sustainability Institute for Black Male Achievement, and Hobsons Inc. Prior to moving to Mobile, Al., Carl served as the Guide Right/Kappa League Director and advisor for the Hattiesburg Alumni Chapter in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, from 1997-2002. Since 1997 Carl has mentored over 300 young men of color through the Kappa League program. Since serving as the Mobile Kappa League Director as of fall of 2002, 95 former Mobile Kappa Leaguers have completed a college degree. There are currently 82 young men who are currently enrolled in an institution of higher education from the Mobile Kappa League program. Carl grew up in the the Church of the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church and is now a member of Christ Church Episcopal Cathedral. Carl’s hobbies are playing his trombone, music, reading, traveling, African American genealogy, and attending Jackson State University football games.
