This past Friday, our TAPPI student chapter had the opportunity to table at the Engineering Student Org. Browse in Brown-Kopel. Students had the chance to talk to members, learn about the Pulp and Paper Industry, and use the paper cart. We are thankful for the opportunity to reach out to more students in engineering and hope to see many new faces at our next meeting!

This past Thursday, our TAPPI student chapter had the pleasure of participating in the Student Involvement Fair! We had an exciting time meeting all the new students on campus and spreading the word about our TAPPI Chapter and the Pulp and Paper Industry. On the job at International Paper in Pensacola, Florida…

Austin Diaz is gaining hands-on experience as a Reliability Engineering Intern, supporting paper machine operations and finished product rolls.

He’s learning how to troubleshoot equipment, understand the role of different rolls in the process, and help reduce downtime after failures—which is key to keeping mills running efficiently.

👉 A highlight of his summer? Visiting a roll shop to inspect damaged equipment and learn how different rolls are used across the mill!

⚙️ His work is helping improve reliability, reduce downtime, and support overall mill performance.

🟠 On the job at Yates Engineers in Birmingham, Alabama...

Meet Ocean Chen, a Chemical Engineering student working as a Process Engineering Intern at supporting projects across the pulp and paper industry.

Ocean’s experience spans reviewing and editing P&IDs and PFDs, checking flow balance and drainage calculations, and contributing to project teams developing company specifications. He’s also gaining exposure to how process, mechanical, and design teams collaborate to move projects from concept to approval.

Through hands-on work and independent learning, Ocean is building skills in industry tools like Bluebeam Revu and WINGEM while deepening his understanding of pumps, process systems, and engineering workflows.

⚙️ Supporting projects that help mills meet production, cost, and regulatory goals, Ocean is gaining valuable insight into how engineering firms partner with pulp & paper operations to drive success.

Meet Sophia Halstead, a senior in Chemical Engineering working as a Finished Products Intern on the paper machine. Sophia is supporting paper machine operations and runnability while contributing to a variety of projects across the mill.
Her work includes creating a process video on linerboard roll quality, developing a ParcView page to visualize shower systems, analyzing data for budgeting decisions, supporting customer-driven quality trials, and conducting consistency testing on both paper machines.

Through these experiences, Sophia is gaining a deeper understanding of paper machine systems from both an operational and management perspective, while also building strong teamwork skills alongside fellow interns, a peer mentor, and her supervisor. She has also become proficient in Lock-Out Tag-Out procedures—an essential component of mill safety.

⚙️ From ensuring product quality to improving process visibility, Sophia’s work supports efficient production and reliable packaging materials used across the country.

Meet Gavin Knight, a Mechanical Engineering student serving as a Pulp Mill Engineer Intern this summer. Gavin is working to monitor and reduce losses of chlorate and other key materials used in the production of bleaching agents—critical to maintaining efficiency and product quality in the mill.

Through this work, he’s gaining hands-on experience with pulp processing systems and learning how chemical recovery and optimization play a role in overall mill performance.

⚙️ Supporting efficiency and process improvement, Gavin is turning engineering knowledge into real-world impact in pulp & paper.

The TAPPI Student Chapter is proud to congratulate Brice on receiving a 2026 Couch Pit Scholarship!

This recognition is especially meaningful, as Brice was nominated by the faculty and staff at Auburn University, with a unanimous decision from our faculty and advisors that he was the most deserving recipient of this honor.

The Couch Pit Scholarship is funded by Couch Pit University and reflects the strong support and commitment of industry leaders involved with Couch Pit who are dedicated to investing in the next generation of talent within the pulp and paper industry.
