“It really is cheesy, but Auburn just feels like home,” said Kate Handel, ambassador and doctoral student at Auburn University.

A third-generation Auburn engineer, she grew up surrounded by family traditions like heading to Jordan-Hare Stadium for game day. Today, she's right at home conducting cutting-edge research on nanomaterials for biomedical applications.

Handel is a fourth year chemical engineering doctoral student researching how iron oxide nanoparticles could one day make MRI contrast agents safer, helping doctors diagnose cancer while reducing harmful side effects for patients.

Natasha Grabau, a doctoral candidate in the College of Veterinary Medicine, will serve as the Graduate School's summer 2026 student marshal at the 3 p.m. commencement ceremony in Neville Arena on Saturday, Aug. 8, 2026.
After graduation, Grabau will continue that work as a postdoctoral research fellow in the Section on Behavioral Neuroscience at the National Institute of Mental Health, part of the National Institutes of Health. She said her Auburn experience has prepared her for that next step by teaching her how to keep the passion and curiosity alive, persist through challenges and remain connected to the communities that make scientific work possible.

While most people are watching the action at an Auburn University football game, Brandon Ryan is watching the crowd. He’s looking for shade, water stations and people quietly heading for cooler places long before the event is over.
Those moments didn’t just catch his attention. They became his dissertation.
Brandon's research is at the intersection of climate science and sports, studying how extreme heat affects people at outdoor sporting events, particularly in and around Jordan-Hare Stadium. It's changed the way he experiences every game, and what he wants to do with his career.
