continues to track east across the United States, bringing freezing rain, heavy snowfall, and dangerous travel conditions. These winter storms can present unique challenges to crews working to assess damage and restore power, as ice accumulation and thaw-and-freeze temperature cycles can cause new damage to trees and branches.

A Coordinated Response:

•National Support: More than 63,000 mutual assistance workers from at least 43 states are dedicated to the Fern response and restoration effort.

•Unity of Effort: The CEO-led Electricity Subsector Coordinating Council is engaged to ensure unity of effort at the highest levels of government and across all segments of the industry.

•Restoration Progress: Damage assessments and restoration work already are underway in areas where it is safe to do so.

We continue to coordinate closely with federal, state, and local partners on this widespread response. Our thoughts are with those who were or are being impacted by Fern and with those who are in the storm’s path.

Today, EEI President and CEO Drew Maloney issued the following statement as electric companies across the country mobilize in response to Winter Storm Fern, which is forecast to bring extreme cold, heavy snow, and damaging ice from the Southwest through the Mid-Atlantic and into the Northeast:

“America’s lineworkers and support teams are staged and ready to work around the clock to safely restore power in harsh winter conditions and serve customers. Industry and government leaders are aligned to support a safe and efficient restoration across our nation.”

Currently, an army of more than 50,000 mutual assistance workers from at least 37 states and the District of Columbia is being strategically pre-positioned to begin damage assessment and recovery efforts as soon as it is safe to do so. This effort is being coordinated through the CEO-led Electricity Subsector Coordinating Council (ESCC) and our government partners, including the U.S. Department of Energy, Department of Homeland Security, and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
