https://bit.ly/4nK1MEM ...The first recipients of the generous Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation Gap Scholarships were among those graduating from Morehouse College on May 17. In the program’s inaugural year, 115 juniors and seniors collectively received $1.24 million in scholarship support. The scholarships are designed to help Morehouse students overcome financial barriers and access the resources needed to graduate. The funding is part of the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation’s $16.5 million gift to Morehouse, announced in October 2025. A total of $50 million was donated to Atlanta University Center schools as part of the gap scholarship initiative. We appreciate the continued partnership and generosity of the Arthur M. Thank you to the Thurgood Marshall College Fund and Lockheed Martin for awarding a $100,000 STEM grant to the Morehouse Center for Broadening Participation in Computing. The investment will support an Atlanta area expansion of the Center’s “RISE UP” computing enrichment program, which was previously offered only to DeKalb County students. The grant will fund summer computing classes for middle and high school students, as well as Saturday sessions during the academic year. Participants who complete the training will receive a certification in Python programming, machine learning, or artificial intelligence.

The National Science Foundation has awarded Morehouse College with a grant of nearly $350,000 to launch a groundbreaking initiative to boost student success and retention in computer science and develop national standards of excellence for STEM at HBCUs. The multi-institutional study is being led by Kinnis Gosha, Ph.D., Computer Science Department Chair at Morehouse. The co-principal investigator of the study is H. Justin Ballenger, Ph.D., assistant professor of STEM education in Morehouse’s Division of Professional and Continuing Studies. The project will also be supported by the efforts of the Morehouse Center for Broadening Participation in Computing, a revolutionary academic initiative and industry partnership that serves as a national resource for best practices that strengthen the pipeline for recruiting and training underrepresented students to compete for tech careers. The CBPC also strives to help make the tech ecosystem a more just, innovative, and equitable space for people of all socioeconomic backgrounds.
