The gallery will be open all week during regular hours (10am- 5pm, M-F) and from 7-10pm this coming Friday, October 6 during our annual MFA open studio party. The event is part of Atlanta Art Week. One of the two exhibitions on view will be photographer Tanyth Berkeley’s “No Past, No Future” in Gallery 150.
In an excerpt from the curator’s note, gallery director Cynthia Farnell writes :
“From a historical perspective Berkeley’s practice straddles the analog world of late twentieth-century photography and the advent of digital imaging (1989), the i-Phone (2007) and social media platforms such as Instagram (2010). The present ubiquity of photographic images and the requisite crafting of the self on social media contrasts with the rarity, authenticity and tender awkwardness of her collaborative images. “

One of the two exhibitions on view will be photographer Jimmy Fike’s “Edible Plants, A Photographic Survey of the Wild Edible Plants of North America” in Gallery 130.
In an excerpt from her curatorial note gallery director Cynthia Farnell writes:
“Arizona-based artist Jimmy Fike borrows the forms and methodologies of botany to create a guide for foraging wild edible plants. Fike uses the form of the herbarium, a centuries-old practice of preserving plants by pressing, drying and mounting specimens on paper in prescribed positions for later study. It’s a form that is associated with British empire building and colonialism from the eighteenth century onwards. Fike merges the conventions of the herbarium form with photography and botanical illustration, to create images that possess both utility and uncanny beauty.”
