Some books teach children to read. Others teach them to see the world a little differently.
Maya’s Mooncakes by Crystal Z. Lee is a beautiful introduction to family, culture, tradition, and the meaning behind the Mid-Autumn Festival. I love books that give children an opportunity to learn about traditions beyond their own while also giving other children the gift of seeing their culture reflected on the page.
As educators, the books we place in our classrooms matter. Representation matters. Cultural curiosity matters. And sometimes, a story shared at the right time can open the door to a much bigger conversation.
Maya’s Mooncakes is one I’m happy to have on my bookshelf.
