What an honor to be a part of the Miami Moonshot, the Unlocking Literacy Conference! Literacy for all is a human rights issue, and The Lucy Project , lead by visionary Sandra Bermudez, is resolutely focused on that priority in partnership with area districts, including Miami-Dade County Public Schools .

It was pure joy to deliver two breakout sessions, and facilitate a crucial panel discussion, including outgoing Superintendent of Miami Dade County Public Schools, Dr. Jose Dotres, business leader and education advocate Robert Sanchez, and the literacy change agent who spearheaded the boots-on-the-ground work of the Mississippi Miracle… which was in truth the Mississippi marathon,Dr. Kymyona Burk now serving as Senior Policy Fellow at Foundation for Excellence in Education . So many best practices, and next practices were highlighted during that conversation.

It takes a village to change the trajectory of a city when it comes to literacy for all. This village is powerful, and determined to move the needle so that literacy leads the way in Miami for generations to come.

Ditto!🎤

Too many well-meaning "reading programs" are missing the mark.
Handing a book to a child—or even reading it aloud to them—is not a solution to the literacy crisis. When a child is reading below basic or struggling due to dyslexia, their brain needs structured, explicit, and systematic instruction in phonemic awareness, decoding, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

Let’s be clear: being read to is a nurturing and valuable experience. But learning to read is a neurological process that requires intentional, evidence-based instruction.
🧠 According to cognitive science and the Science of Reading, children don’t become proficient readers by exposure alone. They need direct teaching of how written language works.
👉🏾If a child cannot decode words independently, no amount of storytime will teach them to read. We must stop confusing access to books with access to literacy.
Programs must be designed to move children from:

being read to →

learning to read →

reading to learn.

Anything less is a band-aid on a hemorrhage.

We don't need to choose between music and learning.

Music is learning. It's part of how children communicate, connect, and make sense of the world around them.
