Parents often ask us what they can do to help and the answer is less about doing more and more about knowing what to focus on.

The most helpful thing a parent can do right now is make sure their student has a clear sense of what the next 12 months look like. That means knowing when they are planning to test, having a general idea of what kinds of schools interest them, and understanding what the application timeline actually requires. You do not need to have all the answers -- you just need to be having the conversation.

If your student doesn't have a plan yet, or if you aren't sure what they should be working on right now, that is exactly what we are here for. We help families get organized early so that nothing sneaks up on them.

Not hitting your goal score on the first ACT or SAT doesn't mean you're behind; it means you are right on schedule.

Most students take the ACT or SAT three to five times, and that is completely normal. Colleges understand that students improve over time, and many schools superscore, meaning they combine a student's highest section scores across multiple test dates to build the strongest possible composite score.

A strong testing plan is often more valuable than a perfect first attempt. Knowing when to test, how to prepare between attempts, and which schools superscore can make a significant difference in how you approach the process.

If your student has a test date coming up or is still figuring out their testing strategy, feel free to reach out. We are happy to help you think it through. reminder

The students who feel the most confident heading into application season are the ones who started planning the earliest.

When students have a testing timeline they actually understand, a sense of what their college list might look like, and a clear picture of what the application process requires, they aren't scrambling when deadlines start showing up. They are following a plan they have already thought through. That shift from reactive to proactive is one of the biggest differences we see between students who feel in control of the process and students who feel like the process is happening to them.

If your student is heading into junior or senior year without a clear plan yet, now is a good time to put one together. It doesn't have to be complicated -- it just has to exist.

If your student is planning to take the ACT this fall, the time to start preparing is not when school starts back, it is now!

Students who begin at least six to eight weeks before their test date have enough time to build a real foundation, identify where they need the most work, and take enough practice tests to feel fully prepared on test day.

The good news is that summer is one of the best times to get ahead on this. There is more flexibility in the schedule, less pressure from school, and more mental space to actually focus.

Most families come to us thinking college advising means help picking schools. It is a lot more than that.
Good advising touches every part of the process, building a thoughtful college list, developing a testing strategy, shaping activities that reflect who the student is, crafting essays that tell a real story, and staying on top of deadlines across multiple applications at once. Each piece connects to the others, and when one part of the plan is off, it affects everything else.

What we do at DTS is help students and families stay organized and stay ahead so that none of it feels like it is coming out of nowhere. The families who feel most confident at the end of the process are usually the ones who had a clear plan from the beginning.

Summer isn't over yet, and there is still time to make it count before the school year starts back!

While it is tempting to fully check out, the students who use even a little of this time intentionally tend to show up to fall feeling more prepared and less stressed. Pick one or two things from this list and make them your focus for the next few weeks. It doesn't have to be everything at once -- just something that moves the needle before August hits. Which one is your student working on this summer?
