"Poetries of Diaspora" cancelled

Friends of Hellenic Studies:

We wanted to wait and to watch the beginning of the 11 o'clock news cycle to see where things stand now, and regrettably, conditions have worsened.

Helene is expected to be a Category 4 hurricane when it makes landfall in Florida tomorrow morning and it is expected to move rapidly north to Atlanta.

They are predicting winds as high as 85-90mph in addition to potential severe flooding (as you know, it has already been raining significantly all day today).

With a very heavy heart, we have concluded that there is no way for us reasonably to attempt to host our scheduled events on Thursday and Friday.

We are deeply saddened that the weather has intervened in this way. But as every good traveler knows, sometimes it takes a long journey to traverse a short distance well.

We will keep the local community informed as we move to determine when it will be possible to re-schedule this event.

We are pleased to announce an exciting upcoming event, “Poetries of Diaspora,” that will take place on September 26-27, 2024, in the Lobby of the Rialto Center for the Arts at Georgia State University [80 Forsyth Street, NW, Atlanta, GA 30303].

Parking will be available at the next door parking deck [123 Fairlie Street, NW]. We have arranged to have $6.00 validation stickers available for our attendees. Please make sure that you bring the ticket you receive when entering the deck with you to the Rialto venue for validation. You will pay the $6.00 fee on your way out of the deck (payment by credit card only).

The Center for Hellenic Studies at GSU exists, in large measure, due to the generosity of a thriving Greek diaspora here in Atlanta. In celebration of that fact, we have invited a group of talented poets to reflect upon the complex experiences of dispersion, dislocation, re-location and renewal from a variety of perspectives, including the African American experience, the Mexican American experience, the Vietnamese American experience, and the experience of a Greek living in the United Kingdom.

Our guests include:

Eloisa Amezcua (Randolph College), author of From the Inside Quietly (Sundress, 2018) and Fighting is Like a Wife (Coffee House Press, 2022);

Opal Moore (Spelman College, emerita), author of Lot’s Daughters (Third World Press, 2004);

Diana Khoi Nguyen (University of Pittsburgh), author of Ghost Of (Omnidawn, 2018) and Root Fractures (Scribner, 2024); and

Niki Orfanou (London, UK, originally from Athens, Greece), author of Le petit Ivan (Le lièvre de Mars, 2018) and Forget Yet Again (Inner Spectator, 2021)

Friday, September 27, 2024
2:30-4:30pm: Poetry Reading-and-Response by our four guests
4:30-6:00pm: Discussion/Q & A with the public
6:30-8:30pm: Closing Reception

We are pleased to share this press release on a new exhibition, curated by Irini Solominidi and Louis A. Ruprecht Jr., that opened at the Gennadius Library in Athens on March 8, 2024.

The show is entitled "The Renaissance Sappho in the Gennadius Library," and on Tuesday, March 26, at 5:30pm Greek local time, Drs. Solomonidi and Ruprecht will be giving a personal tour of the Gennadius exhibit.

We are very fortunate that the Gennadius Library will open for this tour. Everyone is welcome.

We are delighted to invite to you to the upcoming lecture, “Stepping Stone Islands in the Aegean: Kasos Maritime Archaeological Project,” by Xanthie Argyris, Director of Kasos Maritime Archaeology Project and Adjunct Fellow of the National Hellenic Research Foundation.

The lecture will take place on Tuesday, November 14, 2023, at 7:30pm in the Ackerman Hall of the Carlos Museum on the Emory University campus.

We are delighted to invite you to our upcoming music concert that will take place at the Kopleff Theater on the GSU campus at 7:00pm this Friday, October 27, 2023.

Our dear friend, Petros Bouras, will be bringing his Athens-based Trio, "Starwound," to offer an exciting and creative new repertory of poetry set to music.

The performance is entitled “Interiors.” Petros Bouras solicited poems from college and university students that would address the various forms of isolation, meditation, and longing that accompanied us all through the COVID years.

Petros’s invitation bore remarkable fruit, and includes several poetic contributions from GSU’s own Aikaterini Grigoriadou (Katerina Grigoriadou) and Kaitlin Smith. “Starwound” has set each of these poems to their own musical compositions.

We hope that you will be able to join us for what promises to be a memorable and moving event for all.
