Today’s keynote at Paving the Way to a Better Education Conference was a success! ❤️

It’s always an honor to be in the room with likeminded educators doing the work to be the change they want to see. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

There is a huge disconnect between what education should be and what it is.

This we all know. 🧐

One outdated concept that continues to coast along is the idea that parent(s) or guardians will be able to step in to help with homework.

It. Can't. Always. Happen.

Some parents work multiple jobs to survive and don't have the time.

While other parents may not even speak English.

Add to it, a lot of students may not be capable of focusing after they've spent an entire day in school learning.

There's numerous reasons why...

If you have to give homework, it should just be a QUICK review of something the students learned in class.✏️

“Willfully defiant” is a term used to criminalize Black students for the way that they express themselves when the teacher takes offense.

Know this, Black students will challenge educators when they believe they are being treated unfairly or don’t understand the lesson that’s being taught.

That is not being “willfully defiant,” it’s advocating for themselves.

The key here is to get out of your feelings and actually listen to what the student is trying to express without feeling attacked.

Too many Black students are being pushed out of school for advocating for themselves.

Healing the students is important. And so is healing the educators. There has to be healing on every level to be able to move forward. “ 🙌🏾
Do you agree? Why or why not? It is something I feel is absolutely true and valid, but I’d love to hear your thoughts one way or another.

It’s that time of year. You know it. I know it. All educators do. 📚
What’s the biggest challenge you’re facing at the moment? Budget cuts? Tight timelines? Unrealistic expectations?
Put all of that aside for a second. Carve out a minute to remind yourself that judging students on first impressions, let alone students dealing with trauma that impacts every area of their lives, is a bad start for everyone.
Just something to think about. 🔔
