Our journey through the Lowcountry led us to Moncks Corner, where land, spirit, and story met us with open arms.
We began the day at Mepkin Abbey, walking the sacred grounds of their newly dedicated cemetery and reflection garden. Inside the library, we paused to reflect on Jonathan Green’s powerful painting “Seeking,” a visual echo of the spiritual quest guiding our own paths.
From there, we visited Taveau United Methodist Church, where members shared their passionate efforts to restore this historic sanctuary.
We closed the day with a community luncheon hosted by Moncks Corner AME, with heartfelt hospitality from the Golden Circle Ministry and leadership from the church’s pastor.
🍽️ Our meal was lovingly prepared by Chef Amethyst Ganaway, and the room was filled with stories and insights from journalist and author Herb Fraizer, whose words reminded us that we are never far from the past—we carry it with us.

The 2025 Campbell-Wright HBCU Gullah Geechee Internship has officially begun!
We’re thrilled to welcome 22 outstanding interns from 11 Historically Black Colleges and Universities who arrived safely in Atlanta this week to begin their journey.
📍 Day 1 kicked off at Morehouse College, where interns began training with cultural interpreter and heritage specialist Erica Veal. Over the next several days, they’ll become Certified Interpretive Guides through the National Association of Interpreters — gaining vital tools in cultural storytelling, public interpretation, and historical engagement.
📍 Day 2 wrapped up with a heartfelt meal and fellowship at Virgil’s Gullah Kitchen, where the interns had a chance to taste the culture they’re here to preserve. It was more than just dinner — it was a celebration of memory, legacy, and community.
These early moments are already shaping a powerful summer of learning, travel, and impact across the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor.
Thank you to our partners, mentors, and hosts who continue to make this work possible. Next stop: St. Helena Island, South Carolina. 🌊
