Space at the DUC

Lack of Chair Space and Coffee Disappoint Emory Students at the DUC:

Many freshmen students find themselves at the DUC at least twice a day to share meals with friends; however, the lack of chair space in between tables can be frustrating when it is crowded, especially for those who have long legs. While I am a relatively small person, I still find it difficult to get in and out of my seat without bumping into the person sitting behind me sometimes. What makes this problem even worse is the lack of good coffee available at the DUC, which is especially unfortunate for those who need it to wake up from late nights spent studying. Hopefully the upcoming renovations will address at least one of these issues.

DUC hours

Most of the students at Emory university have at least one class that ends by 9-9:30. Due to such a constricted schedule it is hard for them to find the time to have a well balanced meal. After speaking to a number of students I found out that most of them usually ate dinner at later hours, and preferred getting food after 10. In light of this information my research question would be 'What time should the DUC be open till?'

Tuesday farmers markets

Every Tuesday, the farmers market comes to Emory. There are many stalls set up containing numerous items from popcorn to ice-cream; however, one noticeable item is the Blue Donkey Iced Coffee. For the 4 weeks I have spent at Emory, I have always observed huge lines of students waiting for their coffee. Even students who have just 5 minutes before their next class wait in the huge lines to get their coffee, not caring about whether they will make it to their class or not. And, the problem is that the coffee is not cheap. It costs $4 dollars for a medium cup and even more for the large cups. This price is comparable to other high-end coffee shops such as Starbucks who also charge $4 dollars for a medium iced coffee. The question I want to ask if what is it that makes Blue Donkey coffee that special: is it really that good, or is it just selling due to the hype caused by Emory students. Also, I want to find out if we raise the price by $2 for each size, would students still buy the coffee or would they go to other coffee places at Emory. (Image from Google Images)

DUC to go?

Why does the DUC not let students take their food to-go, and how would campus life change if this idea was enacted?

I, like many other students on Emory’s campus, and very active and always have a place to go. Knowing this, I believe that Emory should be as accommodating as possible for the lifestyles of all of their students. However, one of the most frustrating observances that I have made thus far at Emory is the fact that the eatery at the DUC, the main dining hall on campus, will not let students take their meals to-go. Students must sit and eat their food, even if they have limited time, in a specified area, using the DUC’s silverware, plates, and trays. As a freshman especially, my meal plan provides free swipes at the DUC. If I were to want a turkey spinach wrap, I would be able to get it for free at the DUC, but I would have to plate my meal, find a seat in a usually crowded dining area, and completely finish it before leaving. Usually I find myself wasting some of my wrap that I could have eaten for lunch the following day. I could grab the same spinach wrap to-go from Eagle Subs, for example, but I would have to pay around $6.00. In repetition, money adds up. As a researcher, I would be interested in seeing both sides of this issue: those of the students and those of the administration and DUC employees. While this restriction forces students to spend money at other places on campus, to-go boxes provide a nice alternative for students as well as ensure that more food being produced at the DUC does not go to waste. I feel that this is an issue that will result in many different opinions and views, and I highly doubt that I am the only Emory student who has considered this option at the DUC, grabbing napkins to take an extra cookie, apple, banana, or peach.

Fake rocks?

If you have not noticed, there is a fake rock in-between Cox hall and the DUC. There seems to be nothing wrong with it, other than its a random place for a rock, except when it releases a hiss of steam and shakes. What is the purpose of this? Why a fake rock to hid whatever is under it?

Tradition

Tradition:

"Presidents may come, presidents may go; professors may come, professors may go; students may come, students may go; but Dooley goes on forever!"
A 'quirky tradition' and an unofficial mascot, Lord Dooley remains a mystery. He secures the spirit of Emory and from my observation, his presence (especially during his week of honor) is uncertain/unpredictable and what's interesting is how his identity has been kept a secret ("who is he?").

School spirit

Despite Emory’s leading fields in research, academics, and cultural diversity, I have noticed one thing that it lacks – school spirit. For the past 4 weeks being here at Emory, I have observed that not many students are as enthusiastic or passionate about attending athletic/sport games. For example, with last week’s first volleyball game of the season, not many students were in attendance. This leads to my research question of “What can Emory and its students do to increase school spirit? The focus should not be mistaken with school pride, since I have observed that the vast majority of students here are prideful of the wonderful institution we attend. However, I believe that this research is valuable because a livelier atmosphere at Emory with increased school spirit could unite us as a school altogether. With Emory’s varsity teams competing within the NCAA Division 3 level, some students may not want to attend sports event not involved with the highest division level. But, increased school spirit may bring not only unity, but higher attendance at games and bigger support may offer even better performances and motivation for our school’s hard-working athletes. Let’s unite Emory with school spirit!

Cleanliness

I live in Raoul hall and one thing I have seen frequently these days is that quite a few people don't care too much about whether the restroom is clean or not. After they use the bathroom, some of them just leave immediately without flushing(The scene can be especially disgusting when you wake up in the morning and want to use the restroom). Also, after they dry their hands with paper towels, some people just carelessly throw them towards the trash can, and many of those towels just end up staying on the ground. If it's not been for the hard work of those great cleaning staff, the restrooms would have been a mess. A sharing community is what we all want, but to get that we have to think about others when we take actions. .

Recycling observations at Emory:

Assignment 2:
We have these "Recycling Bins" in Longstreet-Means and other residence halls. I put quotation marks because these bins are meant to be the home for recyclable wastes, yet many people (well, at least from my daily observation) just do not sort garbages out and tend to stuff the "Recycling Bins" with everything from batteries to leftover pizza. This definitely makes the Emory recycling process much harder.
