The CBN is an award-winning, interdisciplinary research consortium composed of more than 150 neuroscientists. The CBN celebrated its 10-year anniversary in 2009, marking

the tremendous strides made by center members in research and education that will have lasting impact on the field of neuroscience for decades to come. Research: Our researchers use cutting-edge techniques from brain imaging to molecular methods; they have identified a brain chemical that could have implications in treating autism; pioneered new methods to diagnose and treat post traumatic stress disorder; examined brain signaling systems related to obesity; and determined the genetic sequence of an antimicrobial protein found in the ink of a common sea slug -- a protein that could be used in the development of new products to prevent or kill damaging microbes and save the marine and healthcare industries billions of dollars each year. When evaluated by the National Science Foundation, the Center was found to be "a model for the ex*****on of science." Education: Through programs such as our Brain Camps for middle school, Institute on Neuroscience for high school, and BRAIN for undergraduates, we have created a unique pipeline approach to educating and training the next generation of neuroscientists. The National Science Foundation has lauded the Center's public education program as "truly impressive in bringing science to the people." History of the CBN: The Center for Behavioral Neuroscience was established in 1998 by a grant from the Robert W. In November 1999, the Center became one of the National Science Foundation's Science and Technology Centers and expanded to include seven institutions in Atlanta, Georgia (Georgia State University, Emory University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Morehouse School of Medicine, and the three schools in the Atlanta University Center: Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, and Spelman College) and other community partner organizations. The CBN's original scientific focus was the neuroscience of social behaviors in the areas of affiliation, aggression, fear and reproduction and the emotional and regulatory processes that underlie them. In the intervening years, inclusion of additional behavioral neuroscientists at the participating institutions resulted in an expansion of the CBN's activities into the areas of memory, cognition, reward functions of the brain and positive emotional states. That process continues today as the CBN responds to the changing landscape of neuroscience and the evolving needs of its member institutions.

Wilczynski-GRA Future Faculty Fellowship

Georgia State University is pleased to announce a call for applicants for the Wilczynski-Georgia Research Alliance (GRA) Future-Faculty Fellowship Program. Appointments will be made at the Postdoctoral level. This program recognizes the need to support high-caliber future faculty researchers. The program aims to develop neuroscience scholars for possible tenure-track appointments at Georgia State University and other research universities. Fellows will be supported for up to 3 years with a competitive salary, plus full benefits. Fellows will function as mentored investigators pursuing research in strategically selected areas that capitalize on resident strengths in the Neuroscience Institute and the Departments participating in the GSU Brains and Behavior Program and leverage intellectual and infrastructural resources. Fellows will be matched with a team of co-mentors and will have opportunities for professional development (e.g., training in grant writing, lab management, pedagogy, mentoring, etc.) specifically designed to address areas for professional development in their CVs and provide the targeted support needed to successfully transition into an independent faculty role. In addition to access to the mentors’ laboratories, Fellows will be provided with independent laboratory space and annual seed funds of $30,000 to support independent research. There will be opportunities to mentor undergraduate students and co-mentor graduate student(s) in their research program.

Successful candidates must have a Ph.D. in Neuroscience or related discipline, a demonstrated capacity to publish high-impact peer-reviewed research, and a demonstrated research agenda that aligns with or complements areas of strength in the Neuroscience Institute and/or Brains & Behavior faculty/departments. Preferred qualifications include two years of prior postdoctoral experience in the Neuroscience field and demonstrated interest and aptitude for collaborating across fields and disciplines. Georgia State, the largest university in Georgia, is an enterprising R-1 university located in the heart of downtown Atlanta that enrolls and graduates one of the most diverse student bodies in the nation. Interested candidates should submit their (1) CV, (2) a research statement, (3) a statement of fit for the position that includes (a) how their research interests complement existing research strengths at Georgia State University, including identification of potential faculty mentors and (b) a rationale for why additional mentorship and training are needed at this stage to support their transition to research independence and enhance their competitiveness on the academic job market, and (4) contact information (name, email, and phone number) for three potential references to be contacted by the search committee.
