“I’m hungry Pastor Danny…”
When I heard those words from the mouth of a nine year old who had just been caught stealing from the local family dollar back in 2016 my heart broke… He wasn’t a bad kid. He was a hungry kid. Father in prison. Mother strung out. No food anywhere. He had tried to shop lift and the manager caught him and called me because he knew this hungry kid was a part of our program.
He had been a part of our house church for nearly a year and we had absolutely taught the 20 plus kids coming not to steal. But the issue here wasn’t his morals. The issue was the system and situations he found himself in as a nine year old with hunger pains. His little nine year old self didn’t have a choice of the family or social class he was born into Yes, he shouldn’t steal, and should learn to make good choices… but he also shouldn’t even be this hungry in a country and city where there is plenty of food. He never should have even gotten to a point where stealing was his only option to survive. He shouldn’t be living off of the bags of chips he could fit in his little pockets or the few dollars he could make selling water on street corners. That’s just not fair for these little ones… I looked him in the eyes and promised him: “You will never need to steal again… Just come to my house and you always have a meal.”

It wasn’t long before I realized that many kids were hungry in the summer. School out, and school breakfast and lunches were some of the only meals many kids received. Many kids were bored all summer. Many kids were easy targets for coward drug dealers looking for mules to recruit to run their drugs to their customers… cheap and innocent employees that they could get away with only having to give a few dollars to and not take any risk themselves.
You see, kids weren’t just hungry for food. They were hungry for love… for purpose… for family…

Enter Safe Summer. Kids fed healthy physical and spiritual food all summer long. Kids have fun. Teens get jobs. Lives changed forever.

Year 8 of this program in Atlanta is here. 150 kids participated last year and we are expecting at least 200 to sign up this summer. We can’t do this without your help.

Some thoughts…
21 years into doing this type of ministry I am seeing the long-game impact of providing consistent safe spaces for underserved youth to “be kids” and experience a fun and safe summer in God’s presence with God’s people. I’m realizing yet again that if the body of Christ doesn’t show up for these little ones no one will… Kids are like soft clay and are just waiting for the hands that will form them into who they are to become… When evil hands form them, why are we surprised when we see another generation of shattered lives…?

But we GET to be the hands of Jesus. To reach out with love and mercy, the way Jesus reached out to us, and serve “the least of these” in a way that calls forth their dignity as we love them with the love of Christ and together pursue our true identities in Him… eternal identities of belonging no matter what kind of abandonment, rejection or abuse we might have experienced. An eternal hope no matter what situation is being faced. An eternal and never stopping love that changes everything once experienced. a love so powerful it propels God’s image bearers into the eternal destiny their forever Father in heaven has for them.

How can I not invite you, my friends, to join me and our team in this endeavor?… I know many of you reading this will most likely not be able to come and volunteer and mentor these precious kids this summer alongside of us… We will be very present (and exhausted) as we all serve our hearts out this summer. But you can pray and send us and empower our awesome growing team of grassroots leaders loving and leading these camps. You can help facilitate life changing encounters with God and loving mentors that will never be forgotten. You can sow seed into this soil that every year yields lives changed forever.

We have gotten the price tag down to about $1000/kid for the whole summer. Every summer we have a waitlist. That means, the more sponsors we have, the more kids we can serve. I would love to serve 200 youth this summer if God were to provide the resources for us to be able to. We are better positioned then ever before with our own bus, a strong mentorship base, and wonderful partner camps all around Georgia eager for us to show up.

Would you pray for us right now? Pray for these kids and teens we will get to share life with this summer. Pray for our team as they love and serve faithfully. Pray for protection and wisdom as we organize and transport kids all over the state of Georgia. Pray for provision for this mission and give if you feel led to.
