On Thursday, Aug. 13, our newest 1Ls took the Professionalism Oath in Tull Auditorium, pledging to carry integrity, honesty, and a commitment to justice into law school and their future careers.

Leading the ceremony was Emory University Interim President, Justice Leah Ward Sears 80L, the first Black woman to serve as chief justice of the Supreme Court of Georgia.

For these students, the oath marks the beginning of a professional journey guided by a clear compass and grounded in the values that will shape how they learn, lead, and practice law.

Sherry Boston 99L is the recipient of the 2026 Trailblazer Award.

Boston stands among the elite in the world of prosecution as part of the rare 1% of African American women serving as district attorneys nationwide. Leading a staff of more than 300 in DeKalb County, Boston has placed her office on the cutting edge of justice—mandating implicit bias training and launching specialized units to combat human trafficking and firearm violence. Recognized repeatedly as one of metro Atlanta’s Most Influential People, her innovative leadership continues to shape the national dialogue on criminal justice reform, making her a fitting recipient for this year's Trailblazer Award.

The Trailblazer Award commemorates Eléonore Raoul 1920L, the first woman admitted to Emory University, who became a national leader in the women’s suffrage movement. It can be awarded to any alumnus who has blazed a trail for women through their own professional and personal endeavors. Recipients will be recognized at the 2026 Emory Law Alumni Awards in October.

Environmental law is helping shape decisions that affect communities, businesses, and governments every day.

In this video, Mindy Goldstein, director of Environmental and Natural Resources Law Program and the Turner Environmental Law Clinic, and Associate Professor Mark Nevitt discuss why environmental law is one of today's fastest-growing legal fields and how Emory Law's new Environmental Law concentration prepares students for meaningful careers through rigorous academics and hands-on experience.

Launching in the 2026–2027 academic year, the concentration combines classroom learning with experiential opportunities, including the nationally recognized Turner Environmental Law Clinic and more than 22 approved externship placements.

Greg Hanthorn 85L is the recipient of the 2026 Alumni Service Award.

With a litigation career spanning nearly 40 years at Jones Day, Greg Hanthorn has successfully tried high-stakes disputes ranging from protecting the literary estate of "Gone With the Wind" to landmark trust and estate cases. Just as impressive is his 40 plus-year volunteer commitment to Emory Law, where he has served on the Emory Law Journal Board of Advisors, led fundraising campaigns, and mentored generations of students through the Kessler-Eidson Program for Trial Techniques. For his deep devotion to our community, Emory is thrilled to present him with the Alumni Service Award.

The Alumni Service Award honors an alumna/us who has contributed significant, sustained leadership and outstanding service to the community. Award recipients typically represent alumni who have made Emory Law a priority for service and have contributed a lasting legacy. Recipients will be recognized at the 2026 Emory Law Alumni Awards in October.
