This summer, Dr. Okubo of SU's Psychology Department worked with students Saya Fernandes, Joanna Mason and Rochelle Brown on three sponsored summer research projects exploring race dialogue, the experiences of Asian American women faculty and the impact of COVID-19 on mental health professionals. The students worked collaboratively, gaining experience with different types of studies at various phases of the research process.
Throughout the summer, the students transcribed interviews, finalized protocols and assisted with data collection. Okubo's mentorship helped them increase their professional network and future opportunities, as she plans to include them in presentations and possibly manuscript writing for publications.
“I hope to become a licensed professional counselor to help people with marginalized identities embrace themselves and cope with society,” said psychology major Saya Fernandes. “Working on the race dialogues project has given me insight on the difficulties people experience when talking about race and may allow me to help my future clients when I am working in the field.”
Fernandes, Mason and Brown were among the SU students who presented at Salisbury University's Summer Research Showcase last week.
