Thank you for a GREAT conference!

I’m so excited to be part of this literacy initiative! I have so many take aways to share with you all over the next few days but one that I’ll share now is that it all starts with love and compassion. Kareem Weaver kicked off the conference with this message.

We do this work because we love children and they deserve the best.

We change our practices because we love children and they deserve the best.

When we argue and fight over best practices, kids don’t win, no one wins.

We do this work because there are teachers, school administrators and school district leaders who need this information in their hands to make system decisions that impact students at scale.

We do this work because it truly changes futures…it actually changes a person’s life! Think about that. It matters and it’s urgent.

The big take away: each of our roles, no matter how big or small, matters. It really, really matters.

Kareem Weaver said it best, if you impact “only” 6 teachers/students each day, that’s enough. Do it and do it well!

I’m recharged to continue this work in my own district and to continue supporting and sharing with you all!

Explicit writing instruction, YES PLEASE! Come join the book study!

I’ve been working really, really hard on supporting teachers and coaches with SoR based reading instruction and we are starting to see so much progress! 🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌

I’m now starting to get lots of questions about explicit writing instruction in my own district as well as online. 🙌🙌🙌

Soooo….I decided it’s time to dive more into explicit writing instruction as well and to start sharing what I’m learning and implementing!

But…as I’ve been sharing a lot lately, there’s a huge need for supporting coaches and for coaches to support teachers more than ever before, so the instructional coaches in my district will work through a coaching endorsement together!

Oh the places literacy takes you!

Recently I attended a national literacy training in Nashville, TN and was able to network and collaborate with literacy leaders from all over the U.S.

A resounding common thread was that no matter the size of the state, district, school or the support positions put in place, we are all working to solve the same literacy challenges and recognize the importance and URGENCY for STRONG LITERACY coaches and literacy leadership.

No longer should we accept “winging it” as the norm. Intentionality is in the details and that’s where we will get results!

Over the years through trainings like that one and this amazing online literacy instructional leadership community, the most useful tool has always been being able to pick the brains of others who are ahead of me or trying strategies shared or implementing systems that maybe I’d never even thought of.

Attending this conference inspired me to create a FREE Literacy Instructional Leadership Collaborative for literacy coaches, literacy instructional leaders, school leaders supporting literacy, literacy teacher leaders and aspiring literacy leaders to come together to collaborate!

The meeting will be hosted monthly on Zoom. The first session is Sunday, Sept 3rd at 7:00 EST.
