I’m tired of cognitive science being misconstrued and reduced to “just tell them the steps” and that somehow gets labeled as explicit instruction.

Because that’s not what explicit instruction is.

When it gets flattened into lecture-only math lessons, students end up memorizing procedures without understanding what they mean or when to use them. They go straight to an algorithm even when it doesn’t fit the situation, and they can’t explain what operations like division are actually doing. It turns math into a sequence of moves to recall instead of a system to understand.

Explicit instruction is supposed to make thinking visible, not replace it.
