Congratulations to Communities In Schools of Atlanta board member and Delta Community Credit Union’s Reina Jones, Assistant Vice President, Community Development, who was recently selected as a 2023 recipient of the Joseph R. Biden Lifetime Achievement Award and Presidential Pin for her community and volunteer service efforts.

“I am honored and humbled to be included as an honoree for this prestigious award. My parents instilled the spirit of volunteerism and giving back in me at a young age. It is my goal to continue their legacy, and that of so many other trailblazers, who serve their communities every day,” said Jones. Jones received the award and recognition for her commitment to building a stronger nation through volunteer service. The award includes a letter from Biden, a presidential lapel pin and the Lifetime Achievement recognition certificate.

As a recipient, Jones stands among great company. Former awardees include Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton; former U.S. Surgeon General David Satcher M.D., Ph.D.; Honorable Shirley Franklin; Pastor John P. Kee; Honorable Julian Bond and many more.

So proud to have such an amazing community leader supporting our mission.

Communities In School of Atlanta Site Coordinator Ron Whaley Jr. creates a safe, trusting space for at-risk students at Eddie White Middle Academy. He knows kids need stability to be able to achieve their best.

"Students need to feel loved! They need to believe that they can do and be whatever it is that they want to be in life. Confidence is key, along with perseverance, discipline, and the willingness to go beyond measures."

Every kid deserves to be successful, no matter their address. Since 1972, CIS of Atlanta has been making sure students get the support they need to graduate.

Our Communities In Schools of Atlanta CEO Frank Brown recently paid a visit to Flat Shoals Elementary School to read to the students of Site Coordinator Widmie Deliys-Dyer.

Did You Know? Students who are not reading at grade level by third grade will struggle to understand the written material that is central to the educational process in the grades that follow.

Our program sticks with students through the earliest stages of learning to make sure they stay on track all the way to graduation.

High School senior Isaiah Webb recently was invited to interview Atlanta Council Member Marci Collier Overstreet for Therrell High School's 10@Cubepodcast. While at Atlanta City Hall he met Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens and other officials while learning about what it takes to become a city leader. It's a dream Webb has for himself and Communities In Schools of Atlanta is helping him realize that no dream is too big for our students.

Every year we help students keep their dreams alive, despite the obstacles they face. Through our program for at-risk students, we make sure every kid has academic and emotional support and the kind of opportunities that spark lifelong inspiration.

Click on the video to hear more from Isaiah and consider donating to keep our kids dreaming big.

At Michael Hollis Innovation Academy students felt the holiday love thanks to Mercedes-Benz USA, Communities In Schools of Atlanta, and the nonprofit Shoes that Fit. Each student received a brand-new pair of shoes at this special event with special guest Atlanta Falcons Defensive Tackle Grady Jarrett, who helped Mercedes-Benz USA employee volunteers pass out shoes to each of the students. Our students often need help covering basics, like clothing and food. New shoes make them feel great when they step into the classroom.

Meet Deserae Benton - Site Coordinator, Lovejoy High School.

Deserae Benton has a lot of passion. But the one thing she is most passionate about is giving her students hope and encouraging them to stick with their studies and make it to graduation.

"Our students need us. Families and parents need us. I have so many parents tell me they need all the help they can get. It takes a village, and we are that village to wrap services around our students to empower them to stay in school and achieve in life. We are out here doing the work daily. Students who thought they couldn’t go to college are going. Students who thought they couldn’t achieve in life are now a part of our Georgia Power internship program and are very successful in life. We have success stories after success stories of students who come back and say, thank you, I couldn't have done it without Communities In Schools of Atlanta."

Last school year, Deserae's caseload of students were all Seniors and all at risk of dropping out. A goal was set to see them all graduate and, despite the odds, each one made it to that critical finish line. CIS of Atlanta students are facing the toughest odds, but when a caring adult has their back, it makes all the difference. It's that hope that they need, she says.
