I’m super excited because ABLE at The Outlet is here! This is a heart’s desire realized 🙌🏽

We’re excited to launch a ministry created to support, equip, and build community with special needs families. We’re beginning with a topic many parents have asked for help navigating.

Join us for The IEP Made Simple: Helping Parents Advocate with Confidence, an interactive parent training featuring special education advocate Dr. Dannette Taylor IEP Advocate | Autism Mom Coach

If you’ve ever looked at your child’s IEP and wondered what it all means, what questions you should ask, or how to advocate more confidently, this training is for you. We’ll break down the process, explain the language, and share practical tools you can use throughout the school year.

Whether you’re preparing for your first IEP meeting or have attended more than you can count, you are welcome. And YES, this will be available virtually.

About 10 years ago, I bought a book about giving TED Talks by Chris Anderson

I didn’t have an invitation. I didn’t have a date. I just had a belief that one day I’d be on that stage.

This morning, I found that same book sitting on my bookshelf.

Sometimes the dream comes long before the opportunity. That doesn’t mean it’s not coming.

If you’re in a season where it feels like nothing is happening, keep doing the work anyway. Keep growing. Keep preparing. Your timing isn’t late—it might just be getting you ready for the moment you’ve been praying for.

October 3rd, I’ll step onto the TEDx stage. And today, I’m just feeling really grateful.

I’m sitting in the Delta Sky Club Delta Air Lines waiting for my delayed flight to Houston. I’m speaking tomorrow at Moments of Joy Moments of Joy Fest, an autism conference for parents.

Directly across from me is a dad traveling with his son on the spectrum.

As a BCBA, I can’t help but observe... just a little.

The little boy looks to be around 7 years old. Dad is working on his laptop. His son is happily watching something on his iPad, with a few stims here and there.

It’s quiet. It’s peaceful.

And for some reason, just being in their presence makes me smile.

Maybe it’s because the little boy looks happy and completely at ease.

Maybe it’s because Dad is attentive without looking anxious.

Or maybe it’s because I’ve traveled with families before, and I know what can go through a parent’s mind before they even step onto a plane.

“What if the flight is delayed?”

“What if he gets overwhelmed?”

“What if there’s a meltdown in the airport?”

“What will everyone think?”

I know those thoughts because I’ve walked alongside families carrying them.

So today, I’m simply grateful to witness a father and his son traveling together in peace.

As I sit here making final edits to tomorrow’s presentation, I just want to say this:

To every autism mom and dad who has packed the bags, navigated TSA, boarded the plane, anticipated every possible scenario, and still chose to make memories with your child…I see you.

Your courage is often invisible to everyone else, but it isn’t invisible to me.

Safe travels. You’re doing better than you think!

Zero tolerance: it’s a commitment, not just a concept.

Zero tolerance for bullying, low expectations, harmful misinformation, dismissing a child’s voice, and giving up on kids who need us to stay in the fight.

Therapy is important. School is important. But kids also deserves a life outside of both. I’m talking sports, art, music, swimming, martial arts, community programs. That’s where kids build confidence, find their people, and just get to be kids.

The key is finding the right fit and setting your child up to actually succeed in it, not just dropping them in and hoping for the best. Talk to the instructor before day one. Share your child’s strengths, their sensory needs, what helps them feel settled. A good program will want that information.

Advocate for what they need, celebrate every time they show up, and if the perfect program doesn’t exist don’t be afraid to collaborate and create it! Happy summer!

Your child pulled away from your hug and it stung a little and honestly, that is a feeling a lot of parents have had and very few talk about. But here is what I need you to know: that pull away is not rejection. It is communication.

Many children with autism have sensory sensitivities that make physical affection feel genuinely overwhelming. Not because they do not love you, but because their nervous system is processing that touch very differently than you intended it. The relationship is not the problem. The input is.

So the work becomes figuring out how YOUR child receives love because for a lot of these kids, it looks different.

Quality time, shared interests, words of affirmation, acts of kindness, physical affection on their terms, all of it counts. Find their language and speak it. 💙
